Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Tickets to Aussie Rules Football in Sydney?
Hi,
I'll be in Sydney from August 15-19 (probably - may leave 1-2 days early) and was hoping to catch an Aussie Rules Football game. Knowing nothing about the sport except that it looks a lot cooler than American football, I did some Googling and came up with this:
Sydney Swans vs Geelong
August 16
7:10pm
ANZ Stadium
From the looks of it, apparently the tickets go on sale later this week. Is this what I'm looking for? Will I be able to get there easily from Sydney using public transport? While I need to get totally hammered to enjoy the game (that's fine, I just want to prepare my schedule for the next day appropriately)?

Sydney are in 4th place.

Easy to get to by public transport
ANZ stadium is the same stadium the Sydney 2000 Olympics were held at.
Have fun watching the aerial ping pong.

As a lifelong Geelong supporter I am toying with the idea of a trip to SYD to watch this game. I think the stadium seating configuration now is around 80,000 and I wouldn't imagine a crowd of more than 40 or 50K for this match so should be no issue getting a ticket (but you never know...could be more).
If you wish to book ahead ticketek (http://premier.ticketek.com.au/)is the mob that handles this stadium.
I don't attend a lot of games these days but back when I attended every week I rarely if ever did anything other than a walk-up purchase. Still, probably a wise move to book ahead to be sure, especially given the distance you will have travelled. Just a booking fee to pay I guess.
Hope you enjoy the game, and your trip (and hope Geelong wins)!! ;)
Do the Swans not play at the SCG anymore.
Although I'm not a die-hard AFL fan, I will say its one of the best sports to watch live....enjoy the game!!
And of course any sport goes better with a few cheeky sherbets under the belt;)

They do play most there but some 'larger' games at ANZ as well.
Thanks for the advice.
I will hold off on buying tickets now and just get them if/when I decide for sure we will go, perhaps at the stadium itself.
Thanks again.

I would recommend it - a great Saturday nights entertainment. You can get the train from the city - very convenient and quick. It should be a good game.
I know when I went to NYC and saw an ice hockey match at MSG, it was an great way to spend one of my nights in the USA. Go and watch the footy at ANZ Stadium, have a meat pie and get with the crowd!
You'll have a great time. We went to a Swans game at Olympic stadium last summer. There is great train service to the stadium. Drops off just a few minutes walk from the stadium. It was maybe a 45 minute ride from downtown sydney if I remember right. I had been a fan of aussie rules for years, but I think anyone can have fun. We just bought tickets when we got to sydney at a ticket place in downtown sydney.
I believe public transport fares are often included in the ticket price when buying your reserved seat at that Stadium, so the trains may be 'free'.

Now that I think of that, you're right, you just have to show your ticket (so maybe a reason to buy a ticket beforehand).
