Other European Frequent Flyer Programs - What happens to luggage on EI-AA connection in JFK?

While I fly EI several times a year - three time in last month - it has been many years since I flew transatlantic with them and needed to connect with checked luggage. So, in these days of EI as an LCC, what happens with luggage which has to be rechecked at JFK? Do I need to schlepp it over to Terminal 8 from Terminal 3 on my own, or can it be rechecked after customs at Terminal 3. If the latter, who rechecks it - EI or AA.

On arrival in JFK you will need to collect your bags and clear customs. This is because it is your first point of entry into the USA. After Customs turn left into the interline area where EI have a desk and drop your bags off there. EI arrive into T4 in JFK not T3.
