Hilton HHonors - Honorable, if Humble, Hilton Family Hotels

Let's hear it for those hotels that may not be fancy, may not have amenities up the ying-yang, may be in unexciting locales, may lack glitz, but by golly, they seem to have their hearts in the right place:

Homewood Suites, Downtown Salt Lake City
Homewood Suites, Agoura Hills, CA

Just be sure to ask for an odd-numbered room to get away from the freeway noise.

But I have staged market research events there on several occasions and the staff could not have been nicer or sweeter -- they bent over backwards. Last time I was there, they also put out enough free hot snacks and hors d-oeuvres at happy hour to pass for dinner... along with a huge Coleman cooler of free beers. They go above and beyond the call of duty!

Some of my faves from the Eastern US:

HI & Suites - St. Pete (Ulmerton Rd) FL
HI - Tampa/Ybor City, FL
HI - Geneva NY
HI - New York City (Chelsea)

And though it's a "big city Hilton" I will put in a good word for the Millenium Hilton NYC. Tough location downtown across the street from Ground Zero, but on a recent stay the staff was great, rooms kept well, and the upgrade gods got me a quiet room on the top floor with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge...sweet ^

Why Geneva, NY? It was convenient for the Finger Lakes/NY Wine region, but if you want a nice place to stay, some of the wineries have their own hotels, for similar prices. I found it adequate.

Conversely, the Hampton Inn & Suites, Binghampton NY was one that went above and beyond to make my stay as enjoyable as possible.

I'd also add:
Hampton Inn & Suites, Flagstaff (Beulah), AZ
Hampton Inn & Suites, Kingman, AZ

I stay at both regularly, and the folks at these places really do all they can to make a difference.

I was on a business trip, needing to stay near a client, and the price was very right, compared to some of the winery B&Bs (and those places are often 100% non-smoking and lacking in WiFi). I wasn't expecting a new fresh property with a very good staff, a huge room with a beautiful lake view, great advice on dining in the area, and a Hampton breakfast superior to others. If I were on a tasting tour on the Seneca Wine Trail, I might have made another choice...or maybe not, I liked what I saw at the HI.

On business travel I rely on the standard Hampton amenities to ease my stay and keep myself sane on trips. When I see a HI meet and exceed those standards, I'm quite pleased with it. And I might as well add a couple more I've stayed at that fall in that category:

HI - Cortland NY
HI - Johnson City TN

HI South of Little Rock on IH30 - Staying in Little Rock is not quite as bad as an indeterminate visit to Devil's Island, but the inmates at Devil's Island make better company. A few miles makes a great difference - out of the shadow of the TCBY tower and out of sight of that quintessential salute to unsuccessful design, that awkward metallic erection on the South Bank (not to be confused with the Left Bank in Paris).

I'd like to add:

HI Natchitoches, LA -- they treat me like I'm at their house!
Hilton Shreveport, LA -- same as above, although this is a brand-new Hilton and their amenities are excellent (although no executive lounge :( )
Doubletree Dallas Market Place - Needs a renovation, but the staff is great!

I just spent a week at the (relatively?) new HGI Albany (NY) Medical Center. Very friendly staff, good location if you're going to locations on the south end of town or just want to avoid Wolf Road for once. And a decent sports bar for a quick dinner that lets you charge to your room.

These are good for family stopovers. Friendly places, not high-dollar, good service, enough to do nearby to keep kids happy for a day or two, variety of food options within easy walking.

Embassy Suites, Brunswick Georgia
Attached to a small shopping mall, several family-friendly restaurants on the outparcels, pets welcome. By ES standards, it is small and simple. All in all, a fine stopover on I-95.

Embassy Suites, Charleston, WV.
Great service, a downtown mall next door. Indoor pool. $8 parking is a minor irritant. If you like IHOP, right now a couple of them in/near Charleston are on iDine. Good stopover on I-77 or I-64.

I like the HGI Fredericksburg. The staff are friendly, and they have a decent breakfast buffet (probably a bit better than most CYs IME).

my favorite is the HGI SLC downtown. I check in and immediately was given a upgrade to a great suite everytime I've stayed. Two flat screen tvs, a HUGE elevated whirlpool tub and a very nice mattress.

Some of my other favorite are the Hampton in Troy, OH,
Homewood at TF green in PVD,
Embassy Suite in Anahiem
Hampton at Lake Wales, FLA
Hampton at Oakland Airport
Hampton at DFW-grapevine
Hampton at KC CC plaza

I don't get the HI west covina. I found the rooms very basic and spartan. There are at least 10 other HH properties around there that are a better choice. Only good amenity was a decent Mexican restaurant next door and a Hooter's up the road!

HGI - McAllen (MFE) TX,

Facility is aging a bit but spotlessly clean and the staff bends over backwards to make sure you have a great stay. The beds...cant stand them (sleep number that no matter what you do, to soft) but I keep going back because of the great staff.

But as a note, they told me that they are starting a full remodel.

During an ice storm (end of Jan '09).
They were full of locals w/out power, but all were happy & helpful.
Extended hours for pool & b'fast for the extra people. Glad I made the

I have to second the Hampton Inn Lynnwood, WA. Always nice to have a managers reception at a Hampton. Hampton Inn Downtown Seattle is also a great "basic" property. Always upgraded to a Suite with a great view.

I will add to this list the Hampton Inn in Steamboat Springs, CO. Our family of four just completed a stay there. Customer service was wonderful and the property was clean. Breakfast was hot, with an attendant always nearby making sure everything was stocked and neat. Prior to being an HH member, my Steamboat Springs hotel experiences have included rude treatment at the Fairfield Inn and a deplorable free "breakfast" at the La Quinta. The HI experience was a most-welcome change.

+2!!!^ I stayed on points and avoided the high "summer" rates! It was better than some full service Hiltons and actually has a regular restaurant on premises.

Also,
ES Wash DC/Conv Center -- absolutely a madhouse with families on a holiday weekend but the staff was absolutely outstanding
HGI Houston IAH Airport -- great staff, let us check-in at 7am after arriving on a red-eye (not even a hint on difficulty).
