Mexico - Better way of making lots of phone calls from Mexico

Hello -

My wife and I will be in PVR (Sheraton Buganvilias) for 6 days in early July. This will be a working vacation for both of us. As such, we'll be making a lot of calls back to the states. I'd estimate around ~300 minutes per day. This will add up fast if we're using our US-based cell phones or the hotel's phones. Skype may be an option, but it will be dependent of the strength of the internet connection in Mexico. I don't think switching SIM cards will work since we have iPhones

Can anyone suggest other strategies for lowering the costs of our calls back to the US? Mexican cell phones? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Lots of unlocked cell phones on eBay. I got two for ~$35 each for use in the UK. If you get a US version or a quad band, they will work fine with a telmex or movistar or other SIM.

That's the most convenient but phone cards are probably the least expensive (if you don't go through the hotel).

Google is your friend. ^

You probably mean telcel, not telmex.

You can also check Ladafon and Axtel (Avantel) long distance call cards. I also found this (http://www.cft.gob.mx/wb/COFETEL/COFE_Telefonia_Larga_Distancia), but it seems a little difficult to find specific information.

I'd recommend trying to pin down exactly what quality internet service your hotel offers, as internet based calling is easily the best alternative. Internet access in Mexico is generally decent enough to service VOIP services. Well, i populated areas, anyway!

BTW, Telcel does offer decent products as well, including unlimited high-speed wireless internet access. Not sure how much time you'll be there or how much you're willing to invest, but it might be worth checking out.
