Hi:

I have just been charged by annual fee, $675 for my two platinum cards and this year I am not using any of the benefits, FHR, lounge access etc, I called to see if they will waive the annual fee this year but all they offered were a 12,000 point incentive to keep it, I really want to reduce expenses and am considering a downgarde to the gold card for the $150 annual fee.

They told me that if I downgrade the number will remain the same so I wont have to update all my automatic billing profiles/vendor profiles etc.

My question is that if I do indeed move to Gold, will the actual Platinum cards be still usable - since it will be the same number - I just wont activate the new gold cards and will obviously not have access to the amenities and platinum customer service when I call. Any info/insight would be appreciated.

I don't know if this helps, but when I upgraded from Gold to Platinum, even though my card number stayed the same, the 4-digit CVV code was different on the new card. I think that would mean you could no longer use your old card.

Then what do you want them for?

I don't know the OP's intentions, but if you still have a plat card that's not expired, you can probably still use the airport lounge benefits since the lounge attendants just swipe the card to record the information for amex (no card validity/verification is done on the spot).

Called about canceling Plat. They offered:

$120
or
12,000 mr

I downgraded to Gold Rewards Plus ($150/y w/ 5 free additional cards). Account number unchanged. Credit report unchanged.
