New York City - cheap transport to HPN from Ridgewood, NJ

Cars rentals are $250+ for a two day trip my husband needs to take this weekend to visit his Dad in the hospital. With all the other costs for the trip, I was hoping he could get back and forth without spending a fortune.
He's horrible with the NJ highways, so even a bargain PL win would be tough for him to navigate alone.
CAn anyone recommend a service or tell me what price it typical? It's for Sat and Sun travel to Ridgewood. Thanks.

Thnaks for the quick response. I'm comparing flights to HPN and EWR to see what is cheapest overall.
Limo Express incl taxes tolls fuel charges and tip is $96.50.
Any idea if mass transit is possible? He will land 2.5 hours before visiting hours begin.

Mom uses the Airbrook Shuttle from the Ridgewood Park and Ride out on Route 17--you'd still have to get a taxi from there, I suppose, but it should still be cheaper.

Thanks so much for the Air Brook Shuttle info. It's only $27 from EWR to Ridgewood! Looks like he'll be using EWR.

You could do the following:
take the airtrain to Newark Airport NJ Transit Stop. Take any number of trains that run from Airport stop to Secaucus. Take another train from Secaucus to Ridgewood. Take Ridgewood taxi from there.
It does run on weekends. You're looking at a solid 90 mins though, maybe even more. njtransit.com says fare is $13 each way.

Of course, for some reason the NJ Transit option wasn't coming to mind. And from the train station, your husband could even walk down to Valley (assuming that's where he's headed) if he's got the time and it's not too hot. So between Airbrook and NJ Transit, it's probably just a personal call based on time/money/hassle

Returning home from visit to Dad in hospital and have no ride to airport. The best flight for the money and my husband's schedule leaves from HPN 7:15 pm Sunday night.
Any recommendations?

You could get into the city via Path or NJT and then take the Metro North to White Plains. From there, you can catch a Bee Line bus to HPN. That will probably take a couple of hours, however. If you can manage to get a few miles north into Nyack, NY, there are busses across the Tap to Tarrytown, where you can also catch a Bee Line to HPN.
You may want to check with a few car services, as you may be able to get a ride to HPN for $100 or so, which would save a bunch of time and hassle.
HPN is somewhat out in the sticks and is not well connected to the transit system...
It would basically require taking the train in to NY Penn, getting over to GCT and then taking MetroNorth up to White Plains and then a bus or local cab over to the airport. It would be a $25-40 journey and probably take 3-4 hours total.
HPN just isn't convenient unless you have a car and live right next door.

Out in the sticks indeed. I checked with two of the the limo companies listed on the airport's website and the prices ranged from $132 - $185.
Thanks for the advice, though. I've booked roundtrip thru EWR using Travelocity for hotel/car/flight for a total of $484. Seems quite the deal seeing as the lowest air for the time he needs to travel was $355. Now, if he can just find the airport on the way back !

Ridgewood is a nice easy drive to EWR. just bring plenty of change for the GST and remember that to go east on 78, you first have to go west. I do the drive weekls from slightly further north, and it isn't half bad when it's not rush hour.

I grew up in a town next door and happen to know Valley Hospital. Your choice of EWR over HPN was a very smart one.
If one of you will be without car, getting to EWR would be extremely easy from Ridgewood. Simply take NJ Transit from the Ridgewood station, you'll probably have to transfer in Seacacus, and the train will take you right to the Airtran at EWR.
If you're driving, as another poster said, it will be an easy drive. Depending on the time of day, it could probably be as quick as 30 minutes or so. There are several ways to go, the most simple route that comes to mind is Route 17 to Route 80 to the NJ Turnpike.

This is the route Mapquest came up with and the way we went for his mother's funeral last year. I agree it was quite easy. For some reason when he's alone he always gets lost ;)
