Hi all,

I travelled to SFO via Singapore and HKG on Cathay Pacific last month

I had checked in 2 baggages and carried a backpack and a laptop case with me.

They din weigh my carry on baggage anywhere .. sing .. hkg .. sfo

Now im heading back to india on the same route and my luggage has bloated due to some shopping ..

Some people are advising me to carry a carry-on suitcase and put my laptop in my backpack so that I can stuff a lot of things in the suitcase.

This is the first time im travelling back internationally .. im afraid what to do about excess baggage

Is it okay to carry a backpack and a suitcase (carry-on) ?

wont they weigh the same ?

Please advice ..

A back pack, unless it is small, is considered a carry-on item instead of a personal item.

It also depends whether you are staying airside for the return trip.

alrite ..

so the best thing would be too carry a heavy backpack (carry on ) and a small laptop case (personal item )

Not quite, the best is to checked as much in as possible. People can see the size of your backpack but not the weight. However, there is always a chance you can be stopped, especially if you backpack looks big or heavy. (The guards at the departure hall in HKG weighed my wife's carry-on once.)

I had my carry-ons weighed at the CX counters a few times and the SFO CX counter once. It was odd - for the one time my carry-on was weighed at a SFO CX counter, my carry-on was only 7kg (my limit was 15kg as a DM). The check-in lady put a tag on my carry-on and circle '7' on the tag. I had no idea why she did that. The TSA at SFO has never been that strict on carry-ons.

If you stay airside, there will be much less problem. So far I have not seen any transit security (anywhere) putting any carry-on on a scale.
