Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

I used FHR for hotel reservations on my honeymoon and we got a better upgrade than the normal FHR but I don't know that it was really a Plat thing.

I've not ever depended on them for something especially important to me, though I suppose there are things that they do well - I just haven't found them. I would focus on the local concierge at my destination hotel to handle things like that, not AmEx. AmEx can make hotel and dinner reservations with the best of them if you know what you want. Otherwise you'll likely end up disappointed in what they provide. They just don't have the breadth and depth of knowledge to do it well around the world (or even across the country).

If you use Google to search...

american express platinum concierge

...and scroll past the American Express company sites you can start to find user reports. I found this one particularly interesting...

...be sure to read all Comments which include posts by people who claim to have worked for Circles, the firm which provides the concierge service.

(I posted this link in a previous thread and while I do not recall any discussion I see that the blog's author has added this text Welcome FlyerTalk readers. The most interesting parts of this post are the comments at the bottom. For the record it is not my blog, nor that of anyone I know.)

Mia, thanks for the link.

My personal experience with them lately was unsatisfactory when I have contacted them via email service. When I asked for specific restaurants in NYC that satisfied my families dietary restrictions, the first restaurant on the list that they replied served only food that was on our restriction list. When I replied to them back, I still did not get a proper response.

I did use them previously via calling them and had much better responses then using them via email. Have anybody noticed the same?

If you're using a travel agent, have them contact the hotel where you'll be honeymooning. Many, if not most hotels have dedicated staff to plan your honeymoon.

Send me a pm if you'd like some suggestions.

No need for a travel agent in this scenario. Just call the hotel concierge and work with them to get what you want.

I would not go so far as to claim that "most" hotels have staff to help plan honeymoons, but many - particularly in traditionally touristy destinations - will have a concierge that can help with things like tours and other special requests.

Is it wrong for me to put in a plug for my own profession? :D

ETA: the REAL concierges, not the phone people.

mia, they said welcome to X because they can see the referral links.

also, high end travel providers provide concierge-level service, and have connections similar to local concierges.

Not at all. I was plugging that service, too. ;)

I have had the AmEx concierge call the local concierge for me previously, saving me the trouble of having to make calls in the middle of the night and deal with language issues, but it took forever to actually make a decision because everything was a three day long game of me asking AmEx, them asking the hotel, them getting an answer and then me getting an answer. I doubt I'd leverage the AmEx folks again in a similar situation.

Great link; very informative! I did catch a mistake in one of the comments by the user "AmEx Concierge"...he says Centurion cardholders need to maintain $250K annual spend otherwise they will be demoted. I corrected him in the comments but wouldn't mind if others chimed in to confirm that fact as well.
