Airliner makes emergency landing in LA after report of smoke, fuel smell in cockpit
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Authorities say an American Airlines jet carrying hazardous material has made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the pilot reported smoke and the smell of fuel in the cockpit.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says it is unclear if the hazardous material American Flight 442 was carrying in its forward cargo area was the source of the smoke.
The Boeing 757 was on the way to Miami from San Francisco when the pilot declared an emergency, diverted to Los Angeles and landed shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.
The passengers were being taken off the jet.
