Hi to all of you. I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to travelling to Europe but want to fly to Vienna, Austria sometimes this fall.
I was just wondering if you guys could give me some advice of how and where to book for an inexpensive trip from Los Angeles. There are so many sites out there but the fact that i am financially not too well off i was wondering if there are any deals or discount companies out there of which the "common people" are not aware of ?
Also, any other hint and tip on this matter would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance for all the info.

Are your travel dates firm or flexible? If they are firm, what are they?

Do you have a carrier or alliance you want to earn miles on?

Are you going to buy the cheapest fare or something else? Do you have a price point in mind?

Do you have to depart LAX?

Are you willing to endure long layovers, or change airlines for a better price or do you need to get to your destination ASAP? Are you going to check bags?

All these things will be helpful to know in giving you advice :)

Welcome to Flyertalk!

i am pretty flexible and would fly on days that cost less than others[/FONT]

No, never was enrolled in such programs, as a matter of fact this will be my first flight.

i would like to go the cheapest route possible

Do you have to depart LAX?

i live in san diego but heard that leaving from LAX is less expensive

Are you willing to endure long layovers, or change airlines for a better price or do you need to get to your destination ASAP? Are you going to check bags?

The less stops the better but i am flexible. I'll just bring some carry on and one small check in

All these things will be helpful to know in giving you advice

Thanks a lot, i greatly appreciate it

You can probably find good fares LAX or SAN to JFK or IAD. Austrian Air flies from JFK and IAD to VIE...I don't know if anyone else goes direct to VIE from the east coast.

Delta flies there from Atlanta.

Welcome to Flyertalk, trudikue. There is a Flyertalk Forum dedicated to Budget Travel. I am going to move this thread to that Forum for further discussion.
I know you will receive some great advice.

Any range of dates to work with?

For example, I looked Saturday to Saturday September 20th-27th and found airfare as low as $967 with all taxes and fees.

Pushing out to late October, I was able to find fares under $800 all in.

If you have a set of dates in mind, start by looking on kayak.com or farecompare.com to get a feel on the lowest fares available and what days they are available on.

How long do you want to stay? Tickets do depend on the dates of travel. I looked at generic 1-week to 10-days trips. In very late October and through much of November there are several dates when you can fly for approx $700 (I believe one stop connections).

If it interests you please "pm" me. There is an etiquette at FT that very special opportunities should not be discussed too publicly, otherwise the airlines would plug any loopholes. :) If you are interested in paying $800, I can describe that quite publicly!

I am afraid lower prices are unlikely as long as oil prices remain where they are. I looked at the traditional frugal way of flying to London and then one of the low cost carriers within Europe, but even that is not worth the trouble.

OP your problem is alot more then just findong a so called cheap flight, (I said so called cause what is cheap by todays standards was anything but a yr or 2 ago).

That said I was in VIE myself back in May, and the city is anything but Cheap. Everything is Euro and the US$ is fast approaching the 1.60 level once again.

If its purely a pleasure trip and you wont be slumming it by someones apt. Id say to put it off, till you are better off $$$ wise.
