Attention, laptop-toting U.S. airline passengers! You are either about to become much more productive and happy, or to lose one of your last refuges from the digital deluge that afflicts your life.
Beginning this summer, as soon as next month, wireless Internet access will arrive in the passenger cabins of some commercial U.S. airliners.
On these Internet-equipped planes, any passenger with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop -- or a cellphone with Wi-Fi -- will be able to do almost everything he or she could do online at home or at the office. That includes surfing the Web, using e-mail, having instant- messenger text chats, downloading and uploading files, and streaming video and audio.

Now that is something that I'd like to see on more flights, worldwide! ^

Domestic flights I really don't see a need (5 hours max flight)

International I see the need for this service.

Wait for the first cases of Porn being showing on a flight, or risks to terrorism due to the passengers now having real time contact with the ground.

The 787 was last I heard still withheld from FAA approval due to the in flight and Internet systems being on the same network. Yes Boeing has said a firewall as been put in.

But unless you have a separate cable system, all firewalls can be breached.

This has nothing to do with the Boeing Dreamliner system. This is straight WiFi running back to terrestrial towers and/or satellite relays.

I'll likely enjoy playing around with it at some point, but I doubt that I'll pay the $10-13/flight to use it, at least not frequently.

It's a great news. I have Wi-Fi enabled laptop which I always need with me during journey. So I will be able to access internet in planes and my journey will become more enjoyable.
