Police at Los Angeles International Airport said a large crowd in the sun waiting to get into Terminal 1 appeared to be merely the result of an unusual travel pattern, and not related to any unusual security event.
A reporter at the airport estimated at 10 a.m. Sunday that about 1,000 people were lined up outside Terminal 1, waiting to get through security.
I'm sure it couldn't possibly be related to the TSA changing their ID policies this weekend, right? Really everyone just decided to fly today. Because tickets have never been cheaper nor service more pleasant.

that's bizarre...what do the airlines do when they only have 10 people aboard a flight that's supposed to be leaving...and the other 120 are stuck in line? the report didn't say anything about flights from T1 (Southwest and US, correct?) but I can't see them displacing all those people...who knows

I've seen security lines running a couple of hundred yards a number of times. This sounds similar. Maybe they got a few of those "loupe" idiots who take 30 seconds to look at each ID.

I've found LAX very unpredictable. Sometimes you just walk up to the loupe guy and go through. Other times, and not at especially high travel times like Thanksgiving, the lines at practically every terminal are snaking out of the buildings and onto the upper roadway, with intrepid local reporters and satellite trucks there to cover the event. TBIT is especially prone to long lines. You'd think someone in authority would catch on and get more screeners or streamline the process somehow.

Yup one reason I hate travelling through LAX - a crapshoot as to how long it takes to get through security. Sometimes 5 minutes, other times an hour.
