Budget Travel - Hostel Review: YHA Central, London

This is YHA's newest London property (http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/london/hostels/london_central/index.aspx), opening in February of this year. I selected this hostel because it offers wi-fi (one hour free, daily pass with a 2 pound/$4 purchase at the cafe/bar), and was convenient to transit (Great Portland Street and Regents Park Tube stations nearby, and a 15 min walk down to Oxford Street if you want some exercise).

I shared an 8 bed room (photo 1 (http://tom911.smugmug.com/photos/311721530_h34PQ-M.jpg), photo 2 (http://tom911.smugmug.com/photos/311721559_4bZqU-M.jpg), photo 3 (http://tom911.smugmug.com/photos/312610566_Gq7sk-M.jpg)) and found the hostel, overall, was quiet at night. There was some noise in the morning when street traffic started, generally after 6am, and you could hear this with the windows open. Although I didn't have earplugs along, they would have easily addressed this problem.

Breakfast is 4 pounds ($8) which satisfies the minimum purchase for the daily wi-fi pass (they also have several PC's in place available at an hourly rate).

Breakfast consists of:
-choice or tea/coffee
-orange juice
-croissant (plain or chocolate)
-cereal (small boxes, several choices)
-yogurt (several choices)

The cafe also has big screen TV's that typically had the local news on in the morning and sporting events when I came back in the evening. The rooms have electronic keys that you scan in front of the door lock. The same key opens the hallway doors, and the front door at night. Toilets and showers are at the end of each hallway.

I'd stay here again. The other hostel I've used the last two years in London has been Palmer's Lodge (http://palmerslodge.co.uk/) near the Swiss Cottage Tube station. They offer free wi-fi (password provided at check-in). I met someone in the YHA Central hostel who told me that YHA Oxford Street also provides wi-fi now, but don't have first hand knowledge of this.

I've stayed at Palmer's Lodge also. It's my first choice for a hostel in London. It's not in the center of London but not too far.

The one advantage that Palmer's Lodge has over YHA Central is that breakfast is included in their rates.
