Budget Travel - Washington DC area 4th of July weekend???

Besides the youth hostel, does anyone have any suggestions for a 2 night stay for myself and my daughter?

Will need access to the subway there, so Virginia is an option.

We want to see the fireworks on the mall, and see the museums as well.

I have been researching and all the hotels/motels seem out of my budget. Want to keep it less than $75/night. Am I delusional?

We have stayed 3x at the youth hostel, but I need a better bed than they offer. Old age, ya know....

I've done many a priceline stay for under $75 in Crystal City, including 4th of July in 2006 (photos linked below). Only problem with priceline is that they only guarantee double occupancy, which could mean one bed versus two.

While there are probably some lower-priced hotels/motels on New York Avenue NW, which is a short walk to the Metro, I would advise you to be quite cautious when picking a hotel in that area. It's not the best neighborhood in town and you might find a number of offerings in the under-$100 price range here.

I just priced the Days Inn on Connecticut Ave at $109/nite from July 3-6 (daysinn.com) and you might have a hard time beating that price for a decent hotel in a nicer neighborhood--- this is about a 3-minute walk to the Red Line metro, in upper Northwest near the Univ of DC and a fairly quiet neighborhood. If you can find the extra $30/nite in your budget, this would be my pick--- not too many frills but nice clean good-sized rooms, free parking, subway, safe neighborhood, etc.

Club Quarters? I managed to get a good rate there once.
