Well basically $253 for a USA-JAPAN one way....this is getting out of hand now. Taxes and surcharges will cost close to $600USD!

Does this apply to tickets already booked or just to new bookings?

It doesn't apply if you have already issued the tickets, and use the date booked on the ticket.

However, it seems that after 1JUL08, even if you have already issued the ticket, if you 1. change the date of the ticket to depart on a date after 1JUL, or 2. change the flight number on a flight that departs after 1JUL, or 3. make a reservation using an open ticket onto a flight after 1JUL, such changes will require the payment of the difference in the surcharge.

Thanks, Stargold. My ticket has been issued and is not until next February but I'll be sure not to change the date.

But if you have a trip pending make sure you get that ticket issued before July 1st to avoid the hike in fuel surcharges.

Even in Asia the airlines struggle to advertise low fares. Of course, anyone who's traveled recently knows "NEW! Eco-Wari Narita-San Francisco $850!!" really means $1200 or so.

This topic has been beaten to death all over FT, but I still wish all operating expenses were included in the fare. At least NH and JL haven't resorted to the tomfoolery of the US legacies with the Silly fees.

Does anyone know if NH has tried to tack bigger fuel surcharges onto domestic flights? Considering how much they get for a non-Tabiwari ticket from HND to (pick a city), I would hope they wouldn't need to.

And it was only about 18 months ago that a paid ticket between US-Japan-US could cost as little as $500-$600 and earn frequent flyer miles while at it.

Thanks for the warning.
