I still see the cable...

$3.99 shipping isn't too bad, but if you need more than 3 or 4 you'd be better off with Monoprice as their shipping isn't per item, but by weight.

I don't get it. HDMI cables are usually $60 or more. Why are these so cheap?

I don't get it. HDMI cables are usually $60 or more. Why are these so cheap?A digital cable is a digital cable. Either it works, or it doesn't. Doesn't matter whether it cost $.99 or $60.

Those charging $60 are ripping you off. HDMI cables have been sold for under $4 for ages on sites like Monoprice. You won't get them in a snazzy plastic blister package, and they won't come with an instruction manual explaining why they are superior to other cables.

Interesting...of course, I"m sure the audiophiles in the audience would say that the $200 Monster cable is made from an especially pure grade of copper that blah blah blah.

I'm just glad to know that I can get a cheap HDMI cable when I get some peripherals with HDMI ports to plug into my TV's HDMI ports. :)

Not really. Audiophiles are the ones that usually don't fall for the lame Monster marketing tricks. They will spend a lot on cables, just not Monster.

Monster is the stuff that Joe Average gets talked into when he buys a $500 LCD TV at BestBuy and doesn't mind the additional $200 in cables going onto his Bestbuy card.

And get ripped off, but with an air of superiority while doing it. I hate the cable debate, especially because unless one has the ear of Bach and a faraday cage around their entire house, the idea that spending a bundle on anyone's cables really matters a damn is laughable.

Not even a few pennies worth of gold - a few hundredths of a penny - or perhaps tenths at most.

Back in the alte 90s I was paying ~35 cents for USB cables in HK (at the time I was working for a PC peripheral maker). I often wondered about buying a thousand or so and selling them on eBay for 5 bucks (they were $20+ in stores at the time). Fast forward a couple of years, and everybody is doing that and you can buy USB cables on eBay for a less than buck including shipping - but somebody is making a few pennies in their spare time listing them and shipping them ! Isn't the internet a great thing !

Cables cost very little to make - less than a buck to make a 6' HDMI cable.

There is a case for paying for relatively expensive analog cables (though certainly not Monster or mumbo-jumbo type cables) - speaker cable is one example. There is no reason ever to buy any other than the chepest digital cables (provided that they do actually meet the basic specs).

Another funny cable offering, this time from Denon, who's selling 5 feet of ethernet cable for $499.

Another funny cable offering, this time from Denon, who's selling 5 feet of ethernet cable for $499.

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3429.aspThe description of that item is amazing:AK-DL1

$499.00

Denon's 1.5 meter (59 in.) ultra premium Denon Link cable was designed for the audio enthusiast. Made from high purity copper wire and high performance connection parts, the AK-DL1 will bring out all the nuances in digital audio reproduction from any of our Denon DVD players with the Denon Link feature. Attention to detail when building this cable was used by employing high quality insulation, tin-bearing alloy shielding and woven jacketing to reduce vibration and to add durability. Additionally, signal directional markings are provided for optimum signal transfer. Rounded plug levers help prevent breakage.Who are the ad wizards who came up with this one? I've never seen tin mentioned in such a product. Usually they mention gold a few times. By the way, this product has a few reviews on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AKDL1-Dedicated-Link-Cable/dp/B000I1X6PM) including this one:If I could use a rusty boxcutter to carve a new orifice in my body that's compatible with this link cable, I would already be doing it. I can just imagine the pure musical goodness that would flow through this cable into the wound and fill me completely -- like white, holy light. Holding this cable in my hands actually makes me feel that much closer to the Lord Jesus Christ. I only make $6.25/hr at Jack In The Box, but I saved up for three months so I could have this cable. It sits in a shrine I constructed next to my futon in Mother's basement.

I only gave it four stars in my review because I can't find music that is worthy enough to flow through this utterly perfect interconnect. The rest of the reviews are worth a read as well. Don't laugh too hard!

I've got a gallon of dihydrogen monoxide here for only $99 if anyone wants to buy it :p (Shipping is extra).

My all-time favorite Amazon review is for this children's book:

A sucker born every minute and obviously many suckers who do not realize that inside the fancy electronics they bought be it a tv or fancy tube amplifier you have good old normal wire and solder making connections.

I totally agree with both ScottC and mobilebucky about Monoprice as I have been using them for years. They definitely give you the best bang for the buck and they deliver within days by regular US mail. ^

When I went HDTV, I deferred buying the HDMI cable for 40 bucks since I already had the composite cables. I switched over to Verizon FIOS a bit later and the install rep said I should really have the HDMI. I asked how much, and he said it was included in the install as the 6 foot cable was only worth a couple bucks.
