Travel Technology - TSA-safe laptop cases coming

In what appears to be a boon for Targus and Skooba (and probably Kensington and all the other vendors) the TSA is considering publishing a set of "guidelines" that would allow for laptop cases that would not require the laptop to be removed for scanning. That should be a big boost for the manufacturers, and a tremendous pain for the rest of us dealing with the other passengers who don't have the correct bag but don't remove their laptop and the TSA agents who decide that they don't want to play by the new rules.
Awesome!

Or instead of making us buy new "special" cases that make TSA happy, our government could spend some of that money on upgraded technology so my laptop need not be removed and/or require "special" case.
I doubt these will sell too well. Choice becomes too limiting and we all clearly have our preference for styles of bags. I tend to just use a neoprene sleeve and it's wedged in my carry-on backpack. You'd think that if "special" laptop bags are given a green light, a simple, relatively thin neoprene case would work just as well.
