bmi diamond club - Miles redemption: better to book 2 one ways, or a return?

On BA I always book redemption seats as two one ways, rather then a return.
Other then the fact that if I have to cancel their trip I would only pay one cancellation fee, are their any further advantages in booking a return rather then 2 one ways?

No
Benefit is ability to change the return after departure
That said, in my experience I am substantially more likely to cancel or change the flight rather than change my return date after departure. I therefore now tend to book returns because it save cancellation fees.

Only potential downside there can be to two one-ways is taxes.
Some countries have extra taxes for tickets where the journey commences in that country. Egypt is one, though at only about £25, you weigh that against the flexibility two one-ways allows you.
India is another, with a premium tax on C/F class tickets issued ex. India which can add up to a lot, e.g (from redemption thread) CCU-FRA-ARN one way in LH C, £140. If that was a return ticket issued ex. europe, no charge.
Mexico has VAT on tickets starting there too.

I meant to suggest this for the sticky the other day...
A possible list of countries where its not good to start your trip, or do 2 one-ways due to the higher tax.

Super idea! ^
Thanks for volunteering :D
I thought you could also get a stop over both way with 2 singles vs. only one with a return, but may be wrong there.

The other potential benefit of doing two one ways is that you are able to book flights as soon as they become available - i.e 330 days out

I did not know about this. Sounds great! Is there any change fee involved? I am a gold member.

Sorry .... but am I wrong in thinking you can also get one stopover each way on a return award ticket?

"9 No stop-overs are permitted within Europe. Outside of Europe one stop-over is permitted. A stop-over is a lapse of at least 24 hours between your arrival and departure at any transfer point, i.e. if travelling from London Heathrow to Singapore via Frankfurt, you would not be able to stay in Frankfurt for more than 24 hours."

My read was only one on a return ticket....

Only one stopover, total, on a return ticket while it is one each way on a one way.

On numerous occasions (indeed every time I have asked) I have been able to secure a stopover on both outbound and return when booking a round trip ticket.
I used to always book one way redemptions but I tend to find myself having to cancel trips or I change my mind completely so prefer to pay just one canx charge with a r/t

I think some counties in South America have Luxuary taxes(or VAT) on air ticket.
Other point of view is, if you start your journey from Scandinavia(no, not Finland;)), all SK flights will be free from "fuel surcharges".
But if you book CPH-BKK and BKK-CPH as two bookings. You need to pay fuel surchage on BKK-CPH. (You save 113 EUR/segment on longhaul).
