It's not uncommon for the power outlets to be defective, and by carrying your own power source you can recharge and power without relying on the airline.

I think you are lucky to get a working empower on a domestic UA plane with the exception of PS where they have normal outlets. Though if you need to charge it, don't forget that you can also just plug it into a computer, if you have one with you.

Looks like my plane will have the EMPOWER socket.
Has anyone used an adapter for iphone with success??

That's what I normally do. It's another part of iphone simplicity: you don't need a charger - just a wire. There is always a usb port somewhere... (especially at airports; though admittedly, perhaps not OGG).

Eh, hardly an iphone 'feature', you can get a USB charger for any phone, and cost is next to nothing. And I don't follow that there is 'always a usb port somewhere, especially at airports'. You mean it's easier to find a USB port at an airport than AC? If you're not carrying a computer, I'd say the chances are slim to none unless you want to ask random people with computers.

Not really. The iPhone still needs the special Apple cable to charge. Most of my other gadgets take the same mini-usb connector. iPhone simplicity only exists in the mind of iPhone users who thing their phone has features never seen before.

While a little expensive, I love my iGo charger... laptop, ipod, BB, etc. Can fit on planes, cars, AC, etc.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I ready the travel tech stickies and couldn't find a good answer. I'm stuck in UA's old biz class this Friday to FRA (prob can't leave work early enough to catch the 747), so no normal outlets for me. I'm not flying with a laptop, but I'd love to be able to use my iPhone 3G, and I still haven't found a way to do it. I bought the boxwave kit last year, and my phone detected a power source, but wouldn't let me charge-- some "non-compatible" message. I'm not too price sensitive here, but very size-sensitive, so I'd rather not have a major kit to haul around Europe with me. Does anyone have a product they like that works specifically with both Empower and an iPhone 3G? I'd be happy with just a plug that fits on the end of my normal iPhone charger or a cord that goes directly from my iPhone into the empower port. Thanks a lot,
ps9a

The problem is the iGo and Kensington adapters are only for laptops. I was lucky enough to get the new config on recent Asia trips with the USB charger, but SFO-LHR it was old config and I was stuck using up my backup batteries.
I haven't actually tried these, so I don't know if they work:
- Monster iAir Charger (http://www.mac-access.com/product_p/mon123520.htm) - works with iPod, not sure about iPhone.
- cigarette lighter adapter (http://www.magellans.com/store/Adaptor_Plugs___Converters___Airline_Power_Adaptor sEA270?Args=) - should work with iPhone car chargers.

Honestly, I think you'll be best off buying an external battery pack for the iPhone. Something like this :http://www.frys.com/product/5891703?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
I haven't tried that one in particular, but there are plenty of options to choose from, and that will guarantee you enough power for the SFO-FRA flight with room to spare.

ps9afwiw, i use monster's iairplay (thanks to a recommendation by ScottC ^) on my 5th generation ipod and it is the same connector for the iphone and ipod touch. it did charge goalie-mom's new ipod touch via the car's cigarette lighter (built in adapter with iairplay) so it should work onthe iphone as iirc, it's the same jack
see my post here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/9266485-post137.html) and the few post following. iirc, it is now discontinued but you can still find it (and n.b., the connector is a bit "fat" so i did have to trim the opening on my ipod's plastic case with an x-acto knife to make it fit tho it does fit perfectly without the case)
