SAS said it was visited June 15 and June 16 by EUC officials investigating a cooperation deal between SAS and Maersk Air for a possible breach of competition rules.

SAS and Maersk Air - a Danish airline owned by the A.P. Moller Group (k.map) shipping company and a key SAS rival in the Danish market - started a code-sharing arrangement in the spring of 1999 covering international routes.

"SAS' view is that the cooperation is within the framework the competition rules, but after the liberalization of the European air traffic a new market situation has arisen and therefore we are talking about an area where the borders aren't well-defined," the airline said in a written statement.

The airline said it had delivered a series of documents to the EU officials and that Maersk Air had also been visited by EU officials.
