I have been on a couple of those diverted flights over the years, and yes, just sit on tarmac. Frustrating enough for the SYD people (me included), mind-blowing for MEL people for example, who have to fly back to SYD to then fly back to MEL, AND knowing what a s...t fight it will be in SYD.
Watched a few movies "on the ground" in MEL waiting for clearance back to SYD!
Surely with anything more than an hour on the ground (a minimum time I would suggest), they could have formulated a way to release MEL and similar pax and their bags...surely the containers and the tags can tell the tale...but I am sure there is more to it than that.
