See your Free Days add up fast with this exclusive offer — it’s as easy as:

Register for the promotion on the right.

Rent a Midsize or larger vehicle twice, for two or more consecutive days each, between August 11 and January 31, 2009, and earn one Free Day.

Receive your Free Days via email — and enjoy them from now through 6/25/09.

There’s no limit to the number of Free Days you can earn during the promotion. Use them whenever you like — these Free Rental Days are in addition to the rewards you already earn as an Emerald Club® member.

Fine Print

One Free Day will be awarded for every two qualifying rentals made after the date on which the member has registered. Credit will not be given for rentals made prior to a member's registration date. A qualifying rental is the paid rental, via The Emerald Club, of a Midsize or larger vehicle at participating locations in the 50 United States, including the District of Columbia, or Canada for a period of two or more consecutive days during the promotion.

Earned Free Days will be fulfilled (solely by email to the email address provided at the time of registration) 4–6 weeks after the second qualifying rental and are valid for rentals of Midsize through Fullsize vehicles between January 1 and June 25, 2009, at participating locations in the 50 United States, including the District of Columbia, and Canada. A Free Day is prorated against the base rate of the entire rental period, which does not include taxes (including GST), governmentally authorized or imposed surcharges, license recoupment/air tax recovery and concession recoupment fees, airport and airport facility fees, fuel, additional driver fee, one-way rental charge or optional items. Free Days are non-transferable and will not be replaced if lost or stolen. No more than three Free Days may be redeemed toward one rental of three or more days. Advance reservations required. Void where prohibited by law. Blackout dates may apply. Not valid in Manhattan, NY. Subject to change without notice. Not combinable with other National®- and/or Emerald Club-affiliated promotions.

Referrers of friends and colleagues will earn a maximum of one Free Day, regardless of how many friends and colleagues enroll. In order to receive credit, referred friends and colleagues must use the email address provided by the referring party at time of enrollment.

That would be tremendous!

I'm using up my four '07 days this week on a pair of two day one-way rentals. By being willing to go back to the airport twice and change cars, I'm getting a six-day one-way leisure rental for under $100 all-in ($40 in taxes for the first two-day one-way BNA-BHM, $41 for a two-day weekend rental at BHM, then $13 in taxes for the second two-day BHM-ATL).

I used a free day back in January at EWR to take a nearly 24-hour stopover in NJ on the Air France Rome deal and take a quick trip to ACY. It was weekeday, so the paid rate would have been $84. Still had to pay $16 in taxes, including a $5 "security surcharge" (gotta protect those rental car lots from terrorists!).

Under the right circumstance, the free days can be quite valuable.

I used my free day this past March 2008. I picked up a nice RAV4 at the Dolphin for a one day free rental to get us back to the airport. I only paid $2.64 and returned the car to MCO.... Nice deal for me. It cost me more than that to top off the gas tank.

I struggle every year to use my days as they are very restrictive -- no more than 3 consecutive days can be used, they can't be combined with non-free days, can only rent up to a full size vehicle. (In other words, they aren't very family vacation friendly.)

Does anyone know if those used days count towards the Executive level? I would happily go to the airport and burn a day if it counts toward Exec.

Thanks,
Jeff

You can combine them with non-free days (eg pay one and use one of these on a two-day weekend rental etc).

From what I was told last December, totally "free" rentals (you may still be paying taxes etc) do not earn you a rental credit (eg count towards Exec qual/requal).

Free rentals count towards status (earned free days or promotional free days) the same way all rentals count towards status- 1 credit for rental or every 4 days and not consecutive rentals from the same location. For those of you who have used the one two free promotional days- you can can look at your rental history and click on the rental and scroll to the bottom and you'll see "1 credit(s) have been rewarded for this reservation".

I called EC Administration line today inquiring when the '08 program would start. Answer was "My supervisor thinks its September 1." Find this hard to believe as I remember it stating in August in previous years. I usually take info like this from EC CSAs with a grain of salt as my experience with them is that they are usually poorly informed by the marketing managers.

After I registered it said if I referred someone who signed up for a National Emerald Club membership I'd get a free credit. Is everyone reading this as an ADDITIONAL free credit, on top of the free credit for just registering at the latter website? If so, that's a way to get a free day just by registering, and getting a friend to register for Emerald Club (it doesn't say they actually have to rent)...

TWO: Earn a Free Day every time you rent twice, for two or more consecutive days each, between August 11 and December 12, 2008.
FREE: Receive your Free Rental Days via email to use any time next spring.

There's no limit to the number of Free Days you can earn. They're yours to use whenever you like, during the week or on the weekend — even combine Free Days for longer rentals. Earned Free Days are in addition to the rewards you already earn as an Emerald Club® member.

Bring a friend and make it a double feature.
Once you've registered, tell your friends and colleagues about ONE TWO FREE® '08 so they can earn Free Days and enjoy a fee-waived Emerald Club membership (a $50 value). When one or more of them enroll, you'll receive a Free Rental Day.

There is nothing in the small print about renting for longer time periods.
I have a 2 week rental coming up and it could end up going longer but I would only get credit for 1 rental, whether I rent 2 days or 14 days. Blech!

Yeah, I know I could return the car and get a new one every 2 days, but what a hassle.

I feel your pain. I've been renting continuously since 2005 (on monthly contracts) and have only ever gotten 2 free days at the most because of the way the promotion is designed (rental frequency instead of length). I was hoping this year's promotion would see that change, but unfortunately not. :(

Or just go and exchange every two days :P

I did it for an airline promotion of 1k miles per rental. Although I could have done every day, but that was too much. I was happy to do it every two days. I exchanged at a counter only location, so after the second week, they knew me well enough and processed it fast and efficiently. I think it helped their location because they were always happy (I would originally rent the car at another location, so basically would make 2 one way rentals).

Exchanging without a "space" in between shouldn't work for this promotion - since "back to back" rentals from the same location are considered one rental. There are reports that it could work if you turn a car in just before midnight and take the "new" one out after midnight.

But two one-way rentals back-to-back will work?

btw, where does it say that back to back rentals from same location is considered a single rental? Is it from past experience of this promo?

Well, unfortunately, for me it's a moot point. My monthly rentals are done through my company. Although I do reap the mileage benefits - 1500 AA/month - I have to re-up when my contact at National tells me to every month. I just wish renting by time counted for this promo as much as individual rentals. Having rented for over 3 years straight now, I would love to get more than TWO free days for a promotion that I have a vehicle rented for the entire length of.

A few questions from a relative greenhorn to National.

Does a 1 day + x hours (billed as two days) count toward the promo?
Can I continue to use discounted rates or do I have to book at rack rate?
May I continue to earn miles rather than credits?

I believe the answer is yes for all of these but would like a second opinion.

Your two 1-way back-to-back may be the exception. Back-to-back (at least regular) is considered a single rental based on numerous discussions in this forum (at least from a Rental Credit standpoint - I'm sure this promo keys off the same information). I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Definitely yes to the first two - I've done several myself.

Also, probably yes to the third.

First of all, I can tell you from many many experiences (near 100) that a drop off b/f midnight and pickup after midnight from the same location will earn credits for both rentals (I mentioned this here many months ago). Why shouldn't it? It's two diff. days. I've done this at ORD, FLL, EWR, LGA, MIA, PBI, ATL, LAX, PHL and probably a few others that I can't recall right now.

As far as this promotion (ONE TWO FREE), I am quite positive that any two day rental will qualify even ones that don't earn rental credits (i.e. back to back). I am basing this on last year's promotion and the year b/f that. Unless something changed (which I highly doubt) then it should be the same this year.

Andrew,

The accrual rate is laughably small... 50 miles per day. I feel sure that you could trade a "free" (earned) day cert for more than you would get in AA miles directly. Now this is provided you can transfer a cert... I think the regular earned "free" day certs say they're nontransferrable but I was able to use one I traded on the Coupon Connection board for a one-way rental. Very handy. Don't know if these would work any differently.

Interesting. I know that the accrual rate is laughable, but I've never had a use for free car rentals -- my personal travel is almost always tied to public transportation. The coupon connection (something that I am indeed ineligible for a this time) is an intriguing idea.

So, the question remains -- do we get both, or do we give up the mileage accrual when earning these free rentals?

We have one vote against (w/ vague statement that it was discussed here before) and one vote (w/ many personal experiences) for back-to-back rentals counting as separate rentals as long as they are completed and started before and after midnight respectively.

I am considering breaking my 11 day rental up into a few rentals, I will only be about 15 minutes from the airport. Dropping off and picking up the car around midnight. Although I will need to run the numbers and see how this affects the price and if I can still use the coupons I used on the initial 11 day rental.

So has anyone else had any experience doing back-to-back rentals and if so what was your outcome?

So has anyone else had any experience doing back-to-back rentals and if so what was your outcome?

11:55 return, 12:05 pick up is the way to go.

We just got our 1-2-free promotional free day codes. And so the race for the most....

I had said that consecutive rentals would earn a 1-2-free free day even though it doesn't earn rental credits. Now god forbid I would ever do that but my brother did b/c he had no other choice-none. Anyway, he earned 1-2-free credits for those rentals.

Btw- I'm the one who was the first to bring up the b/f midnight and after midnight idea and I can assure you it works. My hundreds of times that have been successful in getting credits for both rentals attest to that.

One of my brothers just told me that he didn't receive an e-mail with a free day from the 1-2-free promo. Either it's a mistake or his consecutive rentals didn't earn him a free day (even though it worked for my other brother). Ok, further investigation is required. Will update when I know.

Qualifying rentals 6

How is FREE DAYS EARNED = 3?? Should it not be 4, 3 for qualifying rentals + 1 for refer a friend?

Did anyone else have a rental that overlapped the start of the promotion (8/11)? I had a rental from 8/7 - 8/22. The way I read the rules, your rentals qualified if they included two days after the promotion started:

"A qualifying rental is the paid rental, via The Emerald Club, of a Midsize or larger vehicle at participating locations in the 50 United States, including the District of Columbia, or Canada for a period of two or more consecutive days during the promotion."

I've talked to two reps who have refused to budge on this. They also tell me that "Credit will not be given for rentals made prior to a member's registration date", but that doesn't apply since I registered for the promotion on 8/1, well before this rental.

The promo is really sweet this year, now that I've moved all my rentals to National. I have 5 free days already and will earn at least 2 more by the end of the period.

The fact that they work for one-way rentals is the fantastic part about this promo. I can save them up for a long road trip down the Atlantic seaboard this June, and as long as I am willing to stop at a National facility every 72 hours to switch cars and start a new rental, it's all good.

Is there any way to determine which dates are blacked out for the upcoming holidays, or does one simply need to call the 800 number? I know that I am trying to use my free days during what would seem to be a peak rental period, but I am curious if any of my dates are NOT blacked out. I could, theoretically, pay for just the days I need - or only rent a car on the days I need.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am not usually a fan of answering one's own questions, but if anyone else is interested, this is what I found out about "blackout dates" on the 1-2-Free promo days.

There is no published list, according to the CS person I got on the phone last night. They can check the dates that you want to use over the phone, with the free day code that you provide. I suppose that this would work online, too, but I did not check. The rep did suggest to me that if I could not use my 1-2-Free days, I could use the standard earned free days, which do not have blackout restrictions.

Aside from how odd this really is - "you can use this free day, but not this free day" - I am really not looking to turn my nose up at a CS rep giving me a perfectly acceptable work-around.

As it turns out, I was able to use my 1-2-Free day codes for a rental beginning on 12/30 in PHL for three days. I do have to pay for the fourth day, as I am leaving on 1/3, but I was planning on that anyway. I'll take a four-day holiday week rental for about $50 all in any day.

Aside from the onerous step of having to check each coupon code for each day you wish to rent, I thought that this was a relatively simple way of using these codes at a peak demand time.

Silly question - but I have two free days that show as earned from the One Two Free website link posted earlier, and I also see two free days under my National Car Emerald profile. I am assuming these are the same days (I don't think I've earned four days total) .. is there a benefit to booking one way vs the other? The One Two Free website shows different coupon codes for each day, while as far as I can tell the National website just deducts the number of free days from the reservation.

Not silly at all - no they are not the same 2. The ones that are under your Emerald profile are the "banked" ones. While the ones for the 1-2-Free are the "long" coupon codes.

Since this is already the beginning of 2009, your banked ones won't expire until the end of the year, while the 1-2-free ones expire in June, so I'd use the 1-2-fee ones first.

National's system won't let you combine a "banked" free day with a coupon (which the 1-2-Free days basically are).

Still no fun for long-term renters - as I've been renting continuously since before the start of the promo period (in fact, monthly contracts continuously since 2005). Unfortunately, though, while renting through the entire period should have netted 40 or more free days - since the contracts re-up monthly - I've netted 2. Just 2.

I wish National would address this glitch for those that provide the most active revenue, but yield the least reward from the promo. :(

Have to agree with Ritz. I'm Exec Elite and left Hertz because with National I'm virtually guaranteed a low mileage car every time thanks to the aisle. (You wouldn't believe how many 20k Tauruses I got as a Hertz PC.) But, compared to Hertz, I think National's rewards program stinks. Not only is there no benefit to booking longer rentals, but one day rentals, which I do often, get me absolutely zilch.

Plus, for the life of me, I cannot understand these rental credits. Clicking the link that says "Rental Credits" on the left of the reservation screen gives me a list of ONLY RA numbers and credits earned. I assume it's in chronological order, so I cross referenced it to my rental history and started counting. By my count, I earned 27 rental credits in '08. 27/6 credits per free day (I was Exec last year) equals a bit over 4 free days. I had four, but used three during the Christmas holiday. Now I have one. Nevertheless, I keep getting these one-two-free bonus emails telling me about all these days I'm earning. Where are they??? How is this a bonus of any kind?

After a solid year of PC-level business with Hertz, I had enough points for a full week rental in Maui of a convertible Corvette -- like a $1200 value -- with a few hundred points left over. I just never see getting that kind of value out of National's rewards program.

pitflyer
Feb 2, 09, 8:40 am
The bonus rentals are not tracked in your account, you have to go to the link posted above (with 12redeem08 in the URL) to see them. I earned four there (along with four regular free days). Since my expensive rentals are business reimbursed (and even those aren't that expensive) and my personal rentals are dirt cheap weekend ones... will probably get minimal value.. but still a nice promo for me since my rentals fit the profile (2-4 days).

It is confusing and that's why I had someone smarter than me explain it to me (see peteropny's post before).

You get a unique coupon code for each free day you earn. On the Redeem page (https://www.emeraldclubpromos.com/12free08redeem/index.cfm) after entering your email and National club # you'll get the codes. use the coupon codes like any other coupon a regular reservation. You can use up to three coupons on a reservation so you can get three free days if your location has cars available (these are limited unlike 'regular' free days).

Hope that helps. National could make this a lot easier but I guess they wanted to keep them separate from 'regular' free days.

The "something else" you linked to caught my eye, so I researched it. 2+ years ago there was One Two Free, but only in the US, not Canada. In 2007, One Two Free returned to the US, and Rent Rent Reward was announced for Canada. Same promotion, different name. Why? Who knows.

It is called RENT RENT REWARD in Canada because the 1, 2 Free slogan is used by another Canadian competitor.

Good luck getting them to listen. I had a similar issue and it took quite a few emails back and forth before they saw things my way. I had a rental at YEG that was 29 hours, 10 mins, and it qualified. I picked it up at 11:59 pm and dropped it off two calendar days later at 7 in the morning. Maybe it's like the consecutive rental rule where it has to straddle a midnight?

Yep. Have to check each one manually and it shows up as code has been used if that's the case or it's in a pending rental. I also go in order but sometimes I cancel reservations so those codes become usable again, so I have to keep going through all my codes (that's the problem of having so many free days) to see if they've been used- don't want to let any expire.

I have 2 left but can't seem to use either. It's not because I won't have an opportunity, it's because National won't allow me to due to capacity controls at the 5 (YES 5) different locations I was going to be at between yesterday and June 25th. I'm pissed and have called customer service to let them know about my feelings. I was told that if I had 3 left, they would exchange them for a normal free day to use anytime but with just 2, I am SOL. I'm told a customer service manager will call me within 3 business days. It's been 2 full days since my call, they have just 1 more to respond. If they don't, National loses a 15 year loyal customer.

Let us know the outcome.. I called Customer Service, to get them to try to do an override on a reservation... was nothing they could do.

I have 2 days that I would have used, but couldn't.

Ron.

I used 7 of them - six of them, I used for work rentals in situations where the rental car rate was rather high (say $70/day+), and the 7th for a one-way personal rental. I don't mind giving the discounts back to work because they are very good about not having any ridiculous travel policies, and because I'm a shareholder.

But my "regular free days" I keep for myself... I have 7 to use this year, and they are mostly going for vacation travel when I want the ability to pick any car or SUV on the lot.

Well, nobody called me back from customer service so I made another call. I was treated very poorly over the phone by front line and I again requested a call from a supervisor. After 3 days, I was called back. I explained my frustration with the free days but added that the customer service ended up being the deal breaker for me. The gentleman promptly did what was needed to regain my loyalty.

They gave me 2 free "anytime" days for the 2 one-two-free days I couldn't use. It wasn't so much an equal trade for the free days lost but also to compensate for the extremely poor customer service I had received by the 2 prior representatives I dealt with.
