All Apple stores, as well as on-line sales, seem to be out of stock on the current iPhones. So new model due this week?

Could be. Or Apple didn't plan their inventory correctly and ran out of 2nd Generation iPhones too early.

I think this is just another way Apple is trying to build up hype and anticipation for the 3G iPhone. I doubt it will be released until after the start of WWDC.
