Wondering if you still get credit for that night's stay towards elite status when using that cert.

Unfortunately, the free night cert you receive from Visa is basically the same as a free night cert from Marriott. This means no night credit, though accidents do happen occasionally. Just don't hold your breath. Assuming you use the cert at a FS property, then any incidentals charged to the room should get you some points.
