Mexico - What happened to beach at Mayakoba on Yucatan Pen

Recently stayed in the new, luxurious 5 hotel development on the Yucatan Peninsula called Mayakoba (about 1 hr by car fr Cancun). Were very disapointed by the beach (narrow) and ocean (more brown in color than green/blue). Spent a lot of $ here (at the Fairmont) for a mediocre family beach experience and spent most of time at the very mediocre pool and waterslide. Does anyone know if this is a temporary, hurricane induced situation or bad planning by the developers on a mediocre beach?

I think it's a little of both judging by this recent review of the new Rosewood Mayakoba (http://www.luxurylatinamerica.com/mexico/rosewood.html). It seems that with this one and the Fairmont, the beach is almost an afterthought, with most of both resorts' areas being in the mangroves.

Something tells me any erosion will get corrected though as there is a LOT more development going into the whole Mayakoba project, including very expensive villas to purchase. Gotta wonder though if the water gets cloudy when it rains since streams are flowing into the sea...
