Hertz - $100+ Dropoff Charge when returning at differrent airport in LA Area
All,
My wife just rented a car at BUR from Hertz and is scheduled to return it at SNA later this week.
It seems like she got royally screwed. Not only did they charge her an "upgrade" fee to get a slightly bigger car than booked (she is 5*), they are charging her over $100 in a dropoff fee to return the car to SNA. These aren't charges she's been hit with before and I don't see them listed when I check rates on Hertz.com.
Any advice on how to protest (other than either calling the 800# or trying to get it taken off when she returns)? She is renting under a CDP for a very big company - will this help her cause at all?
Thanks
If these charges were on the reservation when it was made and she picked up the car, difficult to protest.
If these charges were *not* on the reservation and they added at pick-up, you should be able to get some justice from the Gold reservations line by comparing her reservation and estimated charges with the final bill.
Otherwise, she should return to BUR if she can and talk to the management there.

Kind of hard to tell what constitutes a "one way" rental. Historically, Hertz has been flexible with cars that remained in the same area and were picked up and returned to a Corporate location.
The terms in the reservation (which was booked through her corporate travel) merely say this...
DROP OFF-
CARS MAY NOT BE RETURNED WITHIN THE STATE OF ALASKA OR
WITHIN MEXICO.
.
ALL SUCCESSFULLY CONFIRMED VEHICLE RESERVATIONS FOR
ONE-WAY RENTALS WILL INCLUDE A VALID RATE AND ANY
APPLICABLE ONE-WAY RENTAL CHARGE.
.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR TRAVEL AGENTS USING SABRE...
ENTER THE HERTZ LOCATION CODE FOR THE DROP OFF LOCATION
IN THE /DO- FIELD ALONG WITH /RC-BEST AND HERTZ WILL
RETURN THE BEST RATE AVAILABLE.

Hertz4me looked into this for me (many thanks!) - apparently she is getting charged a mileage charge but no dropoff fee and that is Hertz's agreement per my wife's CDP.
Thanks Hertz4me for helping to get to the bottom of this.

usually 1 ways are $100/day with NO CDP
with company CDP it charges miles driven, but 99.9% of the time its still cheaper than getting charged $100/day with NO CDP
But airports within the LA area are all co-terminous and not one-way. I've lost count of the times I've rented at BUR and returned to LAX, and vice versa. There should be no charge.

it all depends on the cdp. the return agent can't add charges or alter the cdp terms in hertz's favor out of spite.

Yup - in this case the CDP set a per mileage charge that applies to the rental. The $100 fee was Hertz "guesstimating" that my wife would drive 352 miles over the course of the rental and thus the charge would be ~$100. She will end up driving about 1/2 that so the fee will obviously be lower.
That's the way her company and Hertz set it up, so it is what it is.

Most corporate CDPs are this way. Unless I'm picking up at a city HLE and returning at the airport or v.v. I pay a mileage charge. I usually don't use my corporate CDP when doing 1-way rentals.
