The walk-through-the-airport tax (euphemistically called the Passenger Facillity Charge) will go up from $4.50 to $7 under legislation passed by the House Friday (25). President Bush previously signed legislation raising the tax from $3 to $4.50 in 2001. This tax helps fund your Local Airport Bureaucracy and activities such as official junkets around the world, so that the pols appointed to the LAB can continue to sit in F when they go visit other airports.

While losing the battle for user fees, airlines gained other benefits in the Senate legislation, which doesn't increase their costs. The House version raises airline passenger ticket charges for airport improvements to as much as $7 from $4.50, which would generate $1.1 billion a year.
