Try to use up nearly expire miles to upgrade to J (U) class from coach, agent said it cost $150.00 more for round trip in order to get the upgrade class. It seems like more pricey to get upgrade on CX! Total cost upgrade class fare
for April travel will be around $1050.00

Yes this is true. What's the point?

$1050 sounds right for a H/K class roundtrip travel. I have been paying between $980-1500 for roundtrip H/K class travel. But award availability in Business is getting a lot harder that it used to (on the LAX route), with the downgrade from B74J to B74A. So if you can, try to judge the possibility of your upgrade clearing before you pay for the extra fee.

It works better for some and not as well for others. Most people do not want to pay extra unless they are sure they can get an upgrade. Therefore people are more cautious in buying upgradable tickets. With fewer mileage upgrades, op-ups are easier.

I think it's worth it

.....agent said it cost $150.00 more for round trip in order to get the upgrade class......

This was changed in October 2007. :(

What bothers me more is the fact that some agent no longer allow you to waitlist for upgrade while holding a confirmed upgrade on a different date. :td: They insist that I need to cancel my confirmed upgrade before I can waitlist for a different date which makes waitlisting impractical.

I would spend that $150 if the chance of getting an upgrade is great.

Wait a sec, you can do this at the airport? Change your V/L/M-fare ticket to K-fare and then be able to process an upgrade? I had no idea you could change the fare class after it was ticketed. Is this a Hong Kong only thing or at any port (namely JFK)?

From what I read, I think salfcl meant spending USD150 is worthwhile if the passenger feels that the chance of a mileage upgrade is good. I don't think salfcl meant paying the difference at the airport.

Got upgrade using Miles from Y to C on CX881, old J seat, seat upper window seat, headphone does not work, replace new one,the screen freeze up, move to B, same problem, reboot the system, still the same, move to H seat, still the same, finally settle on K seat, luckily, only 6 pax on uppder desk, imagine if this is a full flight!
Good Service make up the disappointment!
If it happens in USA Domestic, tough luck!

Oh my g-d, the horror of paying an extra $150 to be able to upgrade!

Try flying AA ($600 extra r/t on any discounted fares), or CO (up to $900 extra depending on fare class).

those service charges are only if the upgrade is processed right? I don't think the OP wants to pay for a higher fare ticket and then NOT be upgraded. I think he'd get the K fare if he feels it reasonable enough that an upgrade at the airport is almost certain.
