Do headphones on CX flights have one/two/three prongs? Just want to check whether I can use my noise cancelling headphones (comes with an airline adaptor which has two pins) on their planes.

depends on the aircraft and travel class. But I would venture to say that your earphone adaptor wld work with CX's system whether it is 2 or 3 prongs. For 3 prongs, the 3rd prong is actually to provide power to CX's own noise-cancellation headset.

Thanks. We will be flying economy on A340/Boeing 747/A321. Do you mean they actually provide noise cancelling headphones to economy pax?

they don't provide noise cancelling head phones in economy. You'll probably get a mixture of 1 prong and 2 prongs earphones depending on which aircraft. You shld still be able to use ur earphones onboard

No. You can always buy your own Senhheiser or Bose phones and use the jack provided.

I do have my own noise cancelling headphones and was just wondering whether they would fit the plugs on CX's flights (I normally fly Qantas).

They should, though possibly not on all CX aircraft. Just use the jack that comes with the headphones.

CX has 3-pin headphone jack in every seat (even Y). They just don't provide Y pax with the noise-cancelling feautre, but you are welcome to use your own headphones.

CX has 3-pin headphone jack in every seat (even Y). Sorry, but that's simply not true. Old regional business class has a 1-pin jack.

And from memory some of the 330's

Does anybody know what Voltage those 3rd prongs are? I found on-line that the Tip = Positive power and the Sleeve = Negative, but nowhere does it state the actual power ratings...

I'm also curious about the functionality of the 3rd prong. On my last CX888 (YVRJFK) 747 flight in economy class, I plugged in my two-prong adapter into the 3-prong outlet and heard a faint but distinctive high pitch background noise.

I wonder if the 3rd prong is for grounding?

If the third jack is providing DC power, then all you are doing by plugging in your headphones into that is putting a DC voltage across your headphones. You won't hear anything (apart from noise) because all you you have in the end is a constant current running through your headphones. This is not good for them, by the way.

Much thanks, to clarify, when I plug my single-prong headphone, via a 2-prong adapter into the 3-prong jack, the headphone does work, however, I can definitely hear a high-pitch noise in the background.

The problem happened on both CX 747 flights with different seats in the economy class.

The headphone is a regular noise isolation set by Etymotics without a noise cancellation circuit.

I have used the same headphone on other aircrafts without a problem. Very strange. Of course, if I use the 3-prong headphone supplied by CX, there is no high-pitch background noise.

Any feedback is appreciated.

All the Cathay flights I've been on (mostly HKG-TPE and back, but also YVR-HKG, all in Y) have had a single 1/4" (larger size) jack. Don't know what this talk of 2 or 3 prongs is all about, and never had any high pitched noises using my own headphones.

When I plug in my headphone into the 1/4" jack in the past, I have no problem either. In fact, only on this new CX 747 flight (with new business class) and lots of movies even for economy, do I experience this high pitched noise when plugging my 2-prong adapter.

Very strange.

I just flew on the new 74A (not that new because I noticed the reading lights are old compared with the other transpacific flights) a couple days ago with my Bose QC3 headphones. There's no problem like what you mentioned... I guess Studio CX doesn't like Etymotics =)

Well, I'm grabbing another Etymotics, the HF2 just to try my luck, although we'll be on the JAL 747 and CX AirBus flights this time.
