I rec'd notification of cancellation just as I was thinking whether I should change it due to some sort of weather condition... They don't have openings until Tuesday, so I'm switched over to the TUE afternoon flight.

On another note, I saw a CX B747 in KHH this afternoon. I didn't think there was so much volume on the HKG-KHH route to have a 747... Sounds kind of weird don't you guys think?

Lots of flights landing in HK yesterday were diverted to various airports due to the typhoon. 18 flights were diverted to 6 airports. KHH was probably one of them.

It was a diverted aircraft. CX has no scheduled service to KHH, only KA. @:-)

LOL, that was probably the B747 im supposed to go on. The plane was parked at the gate so I suppose the pax were allowed to deplane.

SCMP reported over 60 diverted flights, to TPE, KHH, MNL, XIA, BKK or even KIX I believe.

Yeah, CX 831 and 841 were both diverted to TPE and didn't continue on to HKG until much later. I'm so glad I chose to travel next week to HKG instead. Hopefully no typhoon then.

I was at the airport today and it was the worst I've ever seen it. The line for CX checkin went down the ramp to the Airport Express platform, along the platform a ways, then doubled back down there!

After a quick look at that my partner and I agreed that now was a really good time to test the guardians with a slightly oversized bag, rather than wait three hours in line and miss the flight. There was a fast lane for people with no checked bags, so the wait was only 10 minutes, and the bag made it through the sizing gauntlet.

Did you ask for compensation? Maybe you could ask for a reroute to SFO/YVR etc or a one-class upgrade on Tuesday.

Also, even though they cancelled 880 on 20th, they are not cancelling the return flight, which is either 883 on 20th or 881 on 21th. So it looks like they are going to fly 880 on 20th without any passengers or cabin crew. So I guess it is more of a staffing shorage rather than an aircraft rotation shortage.

I was already planning to change my flight so it helped me make my decision. But my friend was stuck in the HKG fiasco so I'll pass the message on. Him and his gf are going to miss two days of work so compensation/reroute is definitely going to help out a lot - he's in danger of losing his job!!

Unfortunately my flight from TPE to HKG was one of those diverted back to Taipei in the evening of April 19. I was booked on CX from TPE to HKG but transferred to CI by CX after being checked in at TPE. CI flew us to HKG but had to abort just before landing because of wind-shear warning at HKG. We circled and was advised to divert to KHH. Half way to KHH wast told KHH was full and should proceed to TPE. Once back in TPE, CX simply abandoned those who were originally booked on CX and left us to the discretion of CI. CI did take care of us and flew us back to HKG again after mid-night. We landed safely in the early hours of April 20, in a dry and calm airport without any rain or strong wind. It was quite an ordeal with a satisfactory ending by CI. I only hope I'd earn miles with either CI or CX on this (these) flight(s).

in cases like this (involuntary re-booking to another airline) I always get miles for both flights. for example, I once got re-booked HKG-LHR-CDG CX/BA to HKG-FRA-CDG LH because the CX flight was delayed for 6+ hours - I got both AA miles for my CX/BA flights (which I didn't physically take), and UA miles for the LH flights I actually took. In this case the re-booking was even done upon my request and not proactively by CX (and at that time I was CX Green only although AA EXP).

I think that's true for US based airlines.

You always receive miles for flights you actually took. The question is miles for ticketed but unflown flights. US based airlines will always give you miles, Asian based airlines may or may not give you miles. I have had mixed experience. @:-)

Wow, CX has learned their lessons and now put enough fuel on their TPE-HKG flight to get back to TPE, when weather at HKG is horrendous!!!

Rejoice!!! As at least you ended up back in TPE and was taken cared of by CI.

CX could have diverted you to CAN, and then hold you hostage on the tarmac for 11 hours with only beverage service.

Which was what happened just a couple weeks ago.

I think the weather in CAN was very bad too that night. They could not use CAN as an alternate airport.

well in that particular case I quoted, although I eventually got AA miles for my HKG-LHR-CDG flights booked (but not taken), in fact CX did offer to credit the flights to Asia Miles, but I just chose AAdv in that case. In this case I proactively asked at the check-in desk when they re-routed me, and said they can do CX miles immediately but not AAdv. but eventually I approached AA directly to get this.

and in another instance, again it's HKG-LHR-CDG, HKG-LHR is way overbooked and they need my seat there, so they asked me and then re-routed me HKG-CDG direct, and yet eventually I still get in my Asia Miles account the originally booked HKG-LHR-CDG miles. in this case it took me a call after the HKG-CDG flight was posted to change it back (yes, the difference is minimal...)

and in many instances I had HKG-TPE-HKG downgraded from F to J (last-minute aircraft change), I got the refund + goodwill payment, and yet also still get the F miles. sometimes it's automatic (esp if I remember to remind them during check-in), sometimes it takes a call or two afterwards if only J was posted (they would say - but you already got the refund, right; then I'd say, pls check my old flights on xx, those are also downgraded from F and I still got both refund + original booked class miles)

most of the above experience happened when I was only CX Green...so it seems they are relatively good in honoring miles based on original booking. but yes, sometimes you just need to ask and it's not automatic.

I think in the example quoted it's a CI flight that had enough fuel to go back to TPE, not CX ?

Yes, sorry, I misread that post. The OP was transferred to CI for that flight.

So, let me make another snarky comment then. ;)

Looks like CI (and their AE subsidiary) learned their lesson too, for not attempting to land at HKG during a typhoon.

That was precisely my thought when the pilot pulled up the nose and aborted the landing.:p The image of the crashed AE MD11 lying belly-up on the HKG runway did come to mind. I, or none of us, realized the weather was that bad in HKG. The plane was banking and swaying like on a roller-coaster as we approached HKG. We couldn't see anything until the moment when the nose pulled up. Luckily we couldn't divert to CAN. It was good we came back to TPE and waited out for the weather in HKG to calm down.

I see miles have been posted to my CI account. I'll see if any mile will post to my CX account for the unflown segment.

if you haven't specifically asked at the TPE airport when they re-booked you to CI, I guess the chance is no, the miles won't post automatically...you probably need to give them a call.

Saturday afternoon was particularly nasty, definitely not a time to be landing at HKG. The morning didn't look too bad, but then it really let it rip in the afternoon. I got soaking wet just crossing the street in Wanchai, even with an umbrella.

Wind at Ngong Ping (top of Lantau) was gusting up to 160km an hour... it was a nasty day!

Just a follow-up for future reference. I emailed The Club and was asked to send them a scanned copy of the e-ticket so they could look into the matter. I did so and was advised today that miles for the involuntary unflown TPE-HKG segment originally booked on CX would be posted to my MP account.^ I should thank Typhoon Neoguri for maximizing the miles earned and segments flown on an otherwise ordinary and very short trip.
