Hilton HHonors - Do you get a year gold entension for 20k purchases?

Yes. It's the only way I can maintain my HH Gold. And $20,000 in spending gets you anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 HH points depending where it's spent.

Yes, it's automatic. My monthly Hilton statement tells me my spending so far toward the goal. It is, specifically, $20K in a calendar year. Jan-Dec spending, not any other 12-month period.

It has nothing to do with prior Gold/non-Gold status.

We'll hit $20,000 this month with our Hilton Amex. Do we have to wait until 2009 to be upgraded to Gold status, or will it happen earlier?

I have a 6 night reward stay in NYC in October. I am down to silver. If I charge up to the $20K on the Hilton Amex this month, will I get my Gold back for October or will it take effect in 2009? I can't find the answer, so I need to know if I should put on the charges for my stay or move them to Starwood.

If I remember correctly, you should become Gold when you hit the 20K, and keep it for the rest of next year.

I just became gold on Aug-1-08, after my July charges took me to over $20K since January.
Now, the new question: With HHonors going to calendar year base for status, will this Gold stay thru Dec 2009, or only July 2009 ?

It becomes effective immediately when you hit $20K. I suppose you might have to call if you are on a really tight deadline.

There were reports a couple years ago that some people were given Diamond with $2500 per month spending for 6 months plus.

Not sure whether that was ever verified, or just an urban rumor.

I think it may depend on what you mean by an "extension". If your current gold status lasts until Dec 2009, I don't think spending 20k on your Amex this year will extend it to 2010.

This is a significant reduction in the benefit of the card. Previously it was until the end of the year plus a few months.

Thus people only need to spend the 20k on the Amex every other year to stay gold permanently.

When you get your card, please report back to us on the expiration date. It looks like Hilton may have changed the treatment and we'd all appreciate additional confirmation if that's true.

I got the card back in June and the way things are going, I'll probably end up a few thousand dollars short from the $20K mark. The only way for me to get their by the end of the year is to charge my tuition. Unfortunately my school charges 2.75% for credit card payments. Do you guys think it'll be worth it to push for the Gold status? I'll probably cost me $150-200 worth of extra charges to do so.

Goosey: It's a personal call. You'd have to have a few stays where you'd really get your money's worth. Ask yourself, if you took the $200 in cash and just used it to have a better time during every Hilton stay, would it last long and do the same job? At specific hotels, I'm able to get more than $200-value back on a single stay. Not talking Hampton Inns, tho; more like Hilton Strasbourg or Frankfurt.

I suppose that in the process of incurring that $200 in extra charges, I do get gold status and almost 22,000 points. Just hate having to pay extra.

I have been gold for several years based on Amex spending. I really appreciate the upgraded rooms, bonus points, and complimentary breakfasts. I do not travel as much as others on FT, but I'd have a hard time duplicating the benefits I receive by being gold for only $200. Even if you have only 3-4 stays in a whole YEAR, I'd say pay the tuition fee.

Really? Vegas is how I make Diamond every year. I've got my choice of the Hilton, a couple of ES, and three HGVCs to choose from! (Plus assorted Hamtons and HGIs). To me, it's the ideal place to stay at Hiltons.

Well most of the time, Hiltons aren't that much cheaper than Venetian (at least when I last checked) so I end up staying at the Venetian.

NO way... Venetian usually prices around 250$ whereas hilton (both hilton and hilton grand vacation) is around 100-150$ max. couple time I stayed there. Try to use the hilton eadvantage website and offers rate of $129 for a 1 bedroom suite in hilton grand hilton located in north strip (newer property)

Hmmm... I'm Diamond now, but have only about 12 stays this year. I just hit 20K in purchases. I wonder if I'll move down to Gold when my Diamond expires in April? Seems logical, but it may take a phone call or two.

Your qualifying Year-to-Date spend on your Hilton HHonors Platinum Credit Card is $13,859.00. To qualify for Hilton HHonors Gold VIP Status, you need to have $20,000 in qualified spend by December 31st.

one year that I did not travel a lot I was able to keep my Gold this way, easily made $20k in purchases on HH AMEX, in my opinion well worth it.

I'm in the same situation as the earlier poster. Spent $20K by June and my Gold is good until June, 2009. My guess is that it was 1) before they announced changing back from the rolling tier, and 2) overlooked in that conversion process. Turns out that I will also qualify Gold again before the end of the year on base points and they darn sure better make that through April of 2010!

I became gold in August after spending $20K. I have not received the new card yet. I emailed hhonors@hilton.com and asked them when my status was good until.

I received an email with the following answer:
"In response to customer feedback, Hilton HHonors will soon institute an easy-to-understand calendar year VIP qualification system, counting stays from January 1 to December 31 for VIP Tier qualification. As a result, the VIP Tier Wizard has been deactivated. The requirements for achieving VIP Tiers have not changed. The Wizard will not be turned back on at this time.

I am showing your Gold status is valid until Mar 31st 2010.

If you have any further questions regarding your HHonors account, please let us know."

Odd that some people are getting exactly one year, others are getting longer.

One common thread is that all the people getting only 12 months qualified in the first half of the year, while those getting longer qualified in the second half.

It wouldn't really make sense, but I wonder if Hilton is treating people who qualify in the second half of the year better?

I don't think it has to do with the second half of the year vs. the first half. Hilton went away from their rolling tier system starting in August and anybody qualifying August or later gets automatically extended until end of March 2010.

I think it's just a coincidence that your gold expires the same month you registered for HHonors.

When rolling tier stops, if you spend $20K again in 2009, you should get extended until Dec 2010.

For the people that qualify for Gold through the $20K spend, it should not matter that much at all whether is rolling tier or not. Once you qualify, you get the remaining of the year and the full next year. As long as you keep spending $20K every year, you shouldn't see any lapses in membership.
