Really depends on what you want to do.

If this is just a place to get some rest, Heathrow express will set you back 30 Pounds, which is a bit high for the privilege of staying in the city. Obviously your food choices are much better, but, I don't think it is worth the extra hassle and money if you have been to London and are not planning to spend the night partying.

I've stayed in both last summer, and in terms of property conditions, the Heathrow Hilton is newer and nicer, by far. There is not much to do around Heathrow, however, but if you are having a few long flights, this may be the spot to give you the needed rest.

Many of us on FT have found the Heathrow Hilton to be less than satisfactory. Overpriced and under-serviced. The ride into Paddington was far more worthwhile, plus you can spend a bit of time in London. Jump on the tube and see a bit before your flight. But if sleep is all you want, the Heathrow is OK, but only if cheaper than the cost of Paddington and the HEX. Otherwise there is no time savings, as the walk and transit from the Heathrow is as long (or longer) than the HEX to the terminals.

You should also contact the hotel to ask if they will upgrade Gold to Executive Club access. Paddington will only upgrade Diamond members to Executive lounge access. The last time I stayed at Paddington, the lounge was a room and very unimpressive. Lounge at Heathrow Hilton is reasonable.

Personally I would pick the Heathrow Hilton. It's easy to get to and the rooms we have been given were good. Catch the tube into London for the evening if you want (no need to take the HEX espcially with no luggage). Next morning just sleep in then catch your flight.

We have done this a couple of times and has no problems.

All I can say is that any hotel IMHO in any city centre is better than any airport hotel no matter how nice and personnaly I dont think the Airport hotel is any nicer than the Paddington.

That said it you propably will have more time to spend in the city by taking the HEX straight from the Paddington Hilton ( you probably will be checking in there quicker than just getting to the LHR hilton)
With decent timing you might even have time to take an early breakfast and a little stroll the following morning before heading back to LHR on the HEX.

Book your HEX tix on ANA.com for 24.08GPB return.

I'd just stay at Heathrow. I've stayed at the Heathrow Hilton more than once and thought it was OK although expensive. And if I was using points like you are, the price wouldn't be a factor. I'd figure I didn't really have enough time to do much in London. By the time I get through customs and possibly pick up luggage and get to the hotel it is going to be 9 p.m. or after. (And I'm not into the nightclub scene). Then in the morning I wouldn't do much other than grab some breakfast and check in for my next flight. If I was arriving in the afternoon I might consider going in to Paddington. Although since I am usually travelling with Mrs. daveinSF the $100-plus for the HEX would be a consideration. Also we've been to London numerous time and seen the sights, luckily back when the prices were a bit friendlier for Americans.

How's the newly remodeled Exec Lounge at Heathrow? Last time I was there it was under renovation. Oh, I would stay at Heathrow.

I was there on Wednesday and Thursday. Drink selection is ok but i had to put a couple of beers on ice because the fridge isn't cold enough (recurring problem.) The breakfast was a little wanting- mostly cold food with the eggs and bacon not looking too appetizing. About 10 tables so it can fill up easily- and not alot of room to get around so avoid bringing you lugguage if you can. (Note this description has been what i have seen there for at least the past year so i am not sure what renovation you are referring to.)

On the OP's question with that much time i would go into the city.

I'm a GLD who has stayed at the Hilton Paddington three times since January (included week before last). All three times I was given Executive Lounge access.

The lounge is not large, but more than one room and it provides a view into the train station. The breakfast is a full English breakfast (eggs, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc...)

Book your HEX tix on ANA.com for 24.08GPB return. The tube will set you back only £3.50 each way if you use an Oyster card. It may even be less at off-peak times.

There is also Heathrow Connect, which takes slightly longer than Heathrow Express, as it has a couple more stops between Heathrow and Paddington. It's £6.90 each way.

I was there last Tuesday. I must have missed ALL the hot items you listed. :(

I like both hotels, but for a short stopover and given the price of the HEX, I would stay at the LHR Hilton, where I have never had a problem, even on an award stay.

another vote against the heathrow hilton.

Wow .... so confusing for the OP !

Suppose it really depends on what (s)he wants to do. A bed for the night with room service, then it really doesn't matter too much.

However, from T1, you would be almost as quick getting to Paddington as to Hilton T4. And the food and shopping options in / around Paddington are good enough to make that trip worthwhile.... I would go for Paddington ....

I think the Paddington Hilton is much nicer than the Heathrow one but for one night it does not make that much difference. However if the OP is arriving at T1 then the heathrow hilton is not that convienient as you need to transfer to T4 and then it is quite a walk to the hotel (they will come an pick you up in a buggey). For me unless I am actually leaving from T4 then I normally cough up the £30 for the HEX and go to the Paddington Hilton.

Go for the Paddington Hilton. You will probably spend as much time going from T1 to T4 (albeit for free) as you would going to the city. Paddington is right there at the station and I really think of it as an airport hotel. I always stay there for a Heathrow hotel.

Hi,

How much are the hotels in terms of cost?

I have found that sometimes the LHR Hilton is quite a bit more expensive than the Paddington Hilton ( even after allowing for the Heathrow Express fare)

I have found both hotels to be ok for 1 night ( I have always been upgraded to the Executive floor at LHR hilton -rooms look the same as standard rooms but if a few more amenities) whereas at the Paddington I have been given lounge access but the rooms vary in style and size ( standard rooms are fine but I have been given a suite once and a junior suite another time) .The Executive lounge at Paddington is quite nice with a couple of hot dishes and overlooks part of the station concourse. Soundproofing at Paddington could be better in some of the rooms.
Some of the restaurants at the LHR hilot are a little bit pricy but the bar did a very nice burger ( amongst other things for around £10). There are a few eating areas in T4 landside ( close to the Hilton walkway)

One plus for the hilton LHR is that it has a large gym and a swimming pool whereas the Paddington only has a fitness centre on the 1st floor.

I am relatively easy between the two but if leaving from T4 there is sometihng nice about just walking from the hotel straight to check in without using the train/lifts. If leving from T1 I would be more torn ( price would be a major factor then)

Regards

I was at Paddington last Saturday, and as a Diamond, had lounge priveleges. Nice evening snacks. Limited hot breakfast choices, so we went to the restaurant buffet (included in our rate).

What kind of drinks is the Exec Lounge in Paddington putting out in the evenings?

I have stayed at both hotels. I think they are both good and to be honest whichever you choose i do not think you will be disapointed. Both hotels have nice rooms, however you have a better chance of being upgraded at Paddington than Heathrow in my experience.

Agreed - I just think LHR is the better option due to time constraints, which might be reduced further by flight delays.

FWIW, I recently walked out the door of my hotel room at the Hilton Paddington at 11am and was in the Virgin Clubhouse at 11:35am. The Upper Class private security channel helped, but certainly the Hilton Paddington is very convenient to LHR.

It takes about 10 minutes longer, but the Heathrow Connect is cheaper than the HEX. Given your timeframes I'd probably stay out at LHR though.

Cheers.

Seeing where you've stated you're in and out of T-1, and the LHR Hilton is at T-4 involving a train ride and a long walk through the hamster tube, I'd stay at Paddington. The trip to either hotel from T-1 is roughly the same time/effort, and there is infinitely more to do and see near the Paddington Hilton.

Definitely Paddington. Couple of nice pubs very close. If your flight was early morning, then LHR.

The Paddington Hilton is the former Great Western Hotel and therefore has character. I would go for it just based on that...
