Midwest - Did Anybody Feel the Earthquake?

We just had an earthquake in Illinois. After living in CA for 7 years, I felt my bed shake as if someone had grabbed the mattress and gave it a good shake. The quake was 5.4 and centered in Salem, IL.
Anyone else feel it?

Yep, I live on Chicago's southside and my bedroom shook for about 10 seconds I thought we were having a tornado. But after watching the news they said we had a earthquake. how weird is that.

Yep- I was awake and laying in bed and felt it. I'm in Indianapolis.
Does anyone know if ORD is at all affected by this?
Absolutely felt it here in St. Louis. At first I thought it was the dog kicking the bed but then realized the bed was rocking and the closet door was knocking against its frame. Amazing. Last earthquake I felt was when I was living in Japan.
The last thing my old brick house with tile roof needs is some shaking....

Yes, I totally felt it. I live on the north side of Chicago between Wrigley Field and Lake Michigan. I thought I was dreaming, but I guess not.

That's a site set up to answer the question. Give it a try...

I was sound asleep at 5:30 this morning, but according to the news much of southern Michigan also felt the quake.

Oh, so that's what it was. I woke up briefly and thought my flatmate was having a morning round with someone he picked up at a bar last night :D

I was half asleep. It woke me up for a second, but I thought it was just my morning daze. I went right back to bed. :)

I live very close to the epicenter of this quake. It was centered in West Salem, IL--which, ironically enough, is far east of "Salem, IL". Salem is near STL, but West Salem, is close to the Indiana border. (don't blame me, LOL!)
We felt it for sure. Dh and I both woke up and rode it out for what seemed like forever. Dd woke up as well, and came into our room. No damage in our home, but stuff definitely moved around on shelves. We felt a couple aftershocks during the morning as well.
We've felt quakes here before, but this one was much longer and stronger. Made our piano and large standing clock sing! lol

no effects felt here, I'm three miles north of ORD. Our dogs didn't wake or stir to our knowledge either.

I got woken up by the 4:37am quake. It's the second earthquake I've been in (the first was a 4.2 in New York City in 1984 that also woke me up) and I was like "are things moving?"
Considering that I'm not a fully coherent person when I first wake up, I wasn't sure... but when I realized the dog was moving about, the birds outside were far too loud for that hour and the windchime was going crazy, I was pretty sure it was an earthquake.
Of course the SO didn't feel a thing. When he got up at 6, I asked if he felt anything and he said "What earthquake?"
Sitting in the home office, I also felt the 10:14am aftershock. That time I *knew* what it was.

I was sitting in bed last night doing a crossword puzzle before going to sleep when the bed started gently rocking back and forth. It went on for a good while. I looked down at the dog who didn't budge an inch so I knew it was probably another aftershock. This 3 days after the main one. I don't know what's going on but clearly Mother Earth is rearranging the plates in the cupboard under Illinois.
Also, if there is any truth to the concept of animals being able to feel these things coming beforehand my 12 year old pooch clearly is able to restrain herself from letting me know about it.

Thanks for the clarification as to the epicenter! I suppose there is a East Salem, IL that is west of both Salem and West Salem???:D

schurr, one can only imagine that is so. :D
Last night's aftershock was a 4.5. It did go on quite awhile. Dh and I were in bed (just like the first big one) and it felt similar. I was pretty happy to get on a plane today and leave the area, lol! (of course, it's were I live most of the time, so will have to go back in a week or so)
I wanted to add that my dog and cat could also care less about the whole thing and have had no visible or noticable effects, responses, or premonitions.

I'm surprised. My cats in California disappeared before the 89 world series quake in California as if they knew it was not a good idea to be inside.

Slept right through the early morning quake, but I definitely felt the 10:15AM aftershock, even all the way out in Iowa City. Gotta love that good, hard, midwestern bedrock.

It's been quite a jolly time around here as the media has basically gone nuts with the whole earthquake thing. One of the local radio stations had a "quake weekend". Seems like a good excuse to throw a party.
On Monday one of the local radio jocks talked for a long time about the animal early sensing issue and took calls from lots of locals who nearly unanimously supported the conjecture. I, personally, don't buy it. But, who knows??
My mom says that she heard a roar or something before the shaking started. And other people reported hearing a loud noise or roar at the beginning. I was a bit skeptical but an expert being interviewed on the radio said that the shifting and shaking will often release gasses from the earth suddenly such as radon, etc. Fascinating.
