Los Angeles - LA/Hollywood tours suggestion
Apr 15, 08, 10:59 am
My company is sending me to Torrance CA for a 3 day class (tue-thurs). I am arriving on Monday around 10:15 am PDT. I am looking for suggestions as to what to do with my free time while there - basically most of Monday and Tue-Thurs after 5 pm. I am a 30 something female traveling alone, and have never been to LA before so I am looking to see some of the 'touristy' sites. I am actually staying in a hotel in Hermosa Beach. Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

First, if you aren't already planning to rent a car, you'll need to. Because there are so many options, I recommend getting a travel book and/or visiting a website like www.discoverlosangeles.com to help you decide where to go. Most of the "touristy" places are in Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire and Beverly Hills/Westside areas. Depending upon the route you take, they're all located about 15-20 miles from where you'll be staying.

I've never been on one of those, but it sounds like a good way to go to me....certainly easier than driving around on your own.

i was there a few days ago and used a company called hollywood land who gave us a good 4 hour tour, actually lasted closer to 5 hours and the guy who took us around was a part time actor, a lot of the tour companies will be good just depends if you want a more personal tour or if you want a big group tour, going by yourself there will be places you will miss and will be dissapointed you didnt book a tour with someone

I've never done this so can't personally vouch for it, but I've Los Angeles friends who have done it and say it's the best and most accurate (though self-guided) tour.
If you want to do a Hollywood tour, hop in your rental car, take it north on the 405 freeway, and exit Sunset Blvd. Turn right (east) on Sunset for a couple of miles (just past UCLA). As you continue driving down Sunset, you'll begin to see what look like homemade signs with bold blue paint that say "Hollywood tour maps" on the right side of the road. If you miss the first sign, don't worry -- there will be another further down Sunset, and another after that . . . Sometimes you won't see anyone standing there, but if you wait for someone, they'll come to you. As the story goes, it's a big secret as to who owns this company, how they get their information, etc. Apparently, they operate almost clandestinely. I don't know the cost of the map. I seem to think it was $20 or $30, but I could be wrong.
If you do take this tour, I'd love to hear how it was for you.
