Hey all..long time lurker first time poster. Let me start by saying I go on maybe 5 or 6 flights a year and I slowly accumulate frequent flyer miles. So when an opportunity to really rack up the miles come in I get excited. I just booked a trip as part of my honeymoon to Australia. The flight enatils going from JFK-Sydney-Melbourne-Cairns-Brisbane-JFK! Over 25,000 Miles of travel! I was excited to learn Qantas was a partner with Continental and I called Qantas to provide my frequent flier number when the told me I was inelidgable to earn miles on my flight because I was booked in Q class! I contacted continetal and they rattled off a list of classes I could earn miles in.
I wrote a letter to contintal to vent and they pretty much said tough luck! There is a screen when you book on Qantas that says booking will be classed as discounted economy for frequent flyer miles. When I looked on quantas it states discounted economy earns 50% credit! I feel slighted that my flight that cost me over $2,000 will not net me one frequent flier mile! Is there anything I could do? I feel that Quantas and Continental just don't care.
Anyone have similar experiences and had any luck with getting mileage. Any advice would be appreciated!
My appologies if I put this in the wrong section!

Welcome to Flyertalk!
I think this is in the wrong section but someone will move it for you.
Firstly, 'Qantas' has no 'u'. It's an acronym, not a word ;)
It sounds like you are a member of Continental's OnePass. If you are booked in Q, then they are correct - you will not earn miles / points for this trip, as per:
http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/onepass/earn/airline/qantas.aspx
The '50% discount economy' applies to members of the Qantas FF Program. Perhaps you should join that program to get some credit for your miles?

Thanks for the correction (forgot no U in Qantas!). That is what I was affraid of. Earning 10,000 or so miles on qantas won't do me much good. If I did earn those 25,000 miles on my continental I would have a free trip to Asia

Well on the positive side you are going to an amazing country (my home) for your Honeymoon! For Cairns, I'd recommend exploring OUTSIDE of Cairns - go up to Port Douglas or even further north to the islands (Lizard Island is beautiful, but $$$). Definitely go snorkelling on the Reef, or if you get a chance to do a scuba course, have a go.

Hey..Im staying in Palm Cove, going to Green Island. Is the Daintree Rainforest tours worth it or do you think the Skyrail would be sufficient for a Rainforest experience?? Sorry to switch topics...:D

I think this maybe in the wrong forum....
Bank the miles to QF FF at least you'll get something, all QF flights earn 100% mileage
Whereabouts does it say on the QF website anything about CO mileage accrual, AFAIK it will say "Qantas Frequent Flyer" Classed as discount economy for miles and Status credits.....the onus is on you to check whether or not CO will pay on that fare bucket.
Welcome to FT:)

In my understanding, it's up to the operating carrier, Qantas, to decide which fares to credit to a partner program. Continental earns no revenue from this flight and Qantas has elected not to purchase the OnePass miles for this fare, probably because they believe the fare alone will attract sufficient passengers.

I'm not sure I would ever ring the operating carrier to find out if that fare bucket credits to a different carriers FFP, I would ring the FFP to find that info out.
In any event it doesn't appear the OP did either, until after booking.

FWIW if the miles are that important you could check out what it would cost to upfare to a higher mileage earning class. To do this, first check out CO website for the cheapest earning class on QF. Then call QF and get a quote on what it would cost to change (fare difference + change fee + service fee). Then, if it is worthwhile to you, make the change. If not, then don't.

Originally I put my American Airlines frequent flyer number in. I have less miles there. There is an option to add your American Airliens FF number which I did when I booked. I figured that being the case I was going to get the miles. Then I noticed they are partners with Continental which I much rather get miles on. Thats when I called.

When I booked my trip last year, I was planning on crediting my AA account (that had only 3 or 4k miles in it) but the ticket was booked into a deep discount class (K or T, I think) and would not earn miles on AA. So, I signed up for a QF FF account, got the full 15,000 miles, and am now crediting all my OneWorld flights to the QF account...but I didn't have a ton of miles, unlike in your case. Those booking classes can get tricky, even within the alliance!

While you're there I think the skyrail isn't going to give you the best experience for the rainforest.
If that's all you have time for then maybe take the Kuranda train Up to the top, there's one stop to see the falls. Up top there's really only shops and things and a zoo sort of thing too.
Take skyrail down - there's a few stops that you can get off the gondola things and walk around.
I think a trip up to Daintree and tribulation is probably a good thing if you have the time.
