Etihad's James Hogan is in Australia this week to recognise the success of this region and to try to cut a few deals for expansion to other capitals.
Here are a few local stories to illustrate Etihad's Aussie story:
Sydney networking event [etravelblackboard] (Sydney is Etihad's most successful startup route) (http://www.etravelblackboard.com/index.asp?id=76316&nav=130)
The networking event on Monday night was considered a “testament to their success” by John O’Neill, the general manager of Tourism NSW, as evidenced by the presence of over 35 organisations.
...Minister for Tourism,
...chair of the NSW Tourism Board,
...MD of Tourism Australia,
...CEO of Sydney Airport,
...Manager of Etihad Airways for Australia and New Zealand &
...James Hogan, the CEO of Etihad.
The inaugural year of Australian services has witnessed over 146 000 passengers in the region for Etihad, which is hoped to improve to a quarter of a million or more, with the new services offered.
...James Hogan, CEO of Etihad, maintained that for the airline, “a key fundamental of our network was connecting global cities of the world… Sydney had to be part of the plan.”
Several factors had made this route attractive, especially the NSW Premier’s involvement at all stages, the load factor averaging over 80% and the enthusiasm of the Australian people in ensuring that the service was initiated.
These aspects contributed to Hogan describing the route as the most successful start-up route that Etihad has experienced.
The crew and standards of service and quality onboard have also assisted the superior product from Etihad, as Hogan notes “if you’re going to fly to Abu Dhabi for 14 hours, you may as well do it in comfort and style.”

Etihad, the national carrier of the UAE, will add an extra four flights a week directly between the capital Abu Dhabi and Sydney from October 31, taking its weekly total to eleven.
..The new services would bring an extra 50,000 travellers to New South Wales, the state's Tourism Minister Matt Brown said.
...additional international visitors were expected to inject an extra $20 million into the NSW economy a year.
...Last year 24,000 people from the Middle East visited NSW, an increase of 50 per cent over 2003.
Etihad... has been granted 28 flights a week into Australia by 2010.
...Etihad Airways chief executive James Hogan said Sydney was the airline's most successful launch and continued to be one of the strongest performing routes in its global network.
On its Sydney and Brisbane routes, the airline had 88 per cent and 71 per cent respectively of its seats filled during the first quarter of calendar 2008.
