Is this really a market opportunity? I just can't imagine wanting to go there given current conditions (unless I was on my way to collect the proceeds of an unclaimed account), and the oil companies have their own transport. And if I really want to head to West Africa, I would take SAA direct from the U.S. Sure it's 49% Virgin, but I have not heard good things about the other 51%.

I am sure these flights will be packed, and Virgin Nigeria by the way isn't all that bad. They actually offer a quite decent product compared to many of their compeditors, at least on the domestic market.

How is Delta's Lagos service doing? Whilst I appreciate it would have a significant feed at the other end what's the loads on it?

The Delta direct from ATL to lagos i took last december was quite an experience. I will think the seats on this flight were all occupied. It was a packed flight but unfortunately, the brethen in coach had a 10+ hrs of over head TV's.

The Nigerians in the US are enough to keep this route profitable, as they would prefer the non stop better than long layovers in europe of the middle east(dubai, doha). I use the direct flights for work and the less travelled months always seem to be very busy for the Lagos flights.

Prior to Delta's non-stop that started last year, North American Airlines had daily direct flights from JFK-LOS, but service was discontinued this year. Also, Delta's JFK-LOS was supposed to kick off early june 08 but the route got the axe this year.

Virgin Nigeria on the other hand is not as bad as you all might think. I have flown with them from LOS-DXB and also LGW.....very decent, will fly with them again and prefer thier service to any US airline. I am actually excited that they will be starting the direct flights, as Delta's in flight service is very poor and lacks major IFE. My experience on the DELTA direct was a shame, it almost felt like i was on a US domestic flight but with food service.

DELTA needs to wake up and upgrade thier service because, Virgin will be entering the market with lower fares and premium service.

**VK will offer connections within Nigeria which will make travel easier for Oil & Gas workers like myself that dont end/start our air travels within Nigeria in Lagos.

I see Virgin Nigeria commanding this route.^
