Hi all,
I'm scheduled for this flight on 5/18 in J. Since this is a pretty new flight I didn't find any reviews. Can anyone share their experiences? I'd love to know what the meal service and what will be served in advance.
Thanks.

It will be the old J seats on the A343. You get a full supper after takeoff followed by breakfast before landing plus snacks in between if you go hungry though most passengers will be asleep.

We flew this segment earlier this week. It was our first CX F experience and they had caviar, Krug and Lynch-Bages. Overall a great experience and long enough to get a decent amount of sleep for arriving the next day.
Note check-in doesn't open until ~9pm. We flew up on an earlier flight from Seattle and had to kill a couple of hours. The bar at the Fairmont hotel at the other end of the terminal is a good place to hang out.
The lounge got pretty busy since it also caters for the later flight as well.

I'll be on this flight in J in November. I have a 5 hour+ layover coming in from DFW. What is the lounge at YVR like? Worth hanging around in ? Or is there someplace at the airport to wander to? How about restaurants for dinner? We will be there from 7:30pm until 12:00pm. Where can I get info about the Vancouver Airport? I've never been there before.

With a 4 1/2 hour layover you may want to just grab a cab and grab dinner at a nice Chinese restaurant in Richmond. It is only about 10 minutes from the airport, and there is a good selection available. If you want to get an idea of some hole in the wall and/or ethnic restaurants nearby visit: http://flyaow.com/ver.htm
You can get generic info about YVR at http://yvr.ca
If you don't want to leave the airport, you may want to clear customs into Canada and visit the Fairmont Airport hotel which is in the U.S. departures area of the airport.
The Cathay lounge is fine - but spending 4 1/2 hours there would be a bit much.

That's a great list. We are partial to inexpensive sushi. Especially on a conveyor belt. Any suggestions? I see there is a Japanese restaurant at the airport. Any good?

I'd skip the sushi at the airport. It is nothing special. The only conveyor sushi I know of is downtown Vancouver, and is not particularly high quality. It is called Tsunami I believe. If you are heading downtown and like Japanese food, I'd suggest that you try one of the Japanese izakaya instead. But the easiest is really going to Richmond and enjoying some of the food there.

Which of these Japanese restaurants do you like? I LOVE izakaya places-any in Richmond on the list? There are no izakaya in Kansas city, so I have to find them when I travel.

There is one in Richmond that I have not tried, and have heard mixed reviews of called Nan Chuu. It is located on Alexandra Road, which is also known as an "eating street" in Richmond with many good small restaurants. But I haven't tried it.
The other that opened somewhat recently in Richmond that I haven't tried is Guu: http://www.guu-izakaya.com/richmond.html
They have several locations, and I used to like their Guu with Garlic location in downtown Vancouver, but the quality went a bit downhill. I don't know how the Richmond location is.
The Guu in Richmond is in the Aberdeen Centre, which is a modern Chinese mall. Details here: http://www.aberdeencentre.com
If you happen to go there, you might want to make a quick stop in the food court for the Chicken Wings at Wo Fung Desert, and possibly pick up a Beard Papa cream puff (both of those are in the food court).
If you venture downtown, then one of the popular ones is Shiru-Bay: http://www.shiru-bay.com/
Enjoy your brief stay in the Vancouver area!

P.S. If you do decide to try the Chinese food in Richmond, you might find this link useful: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=14081

Looks like having dinner in Vancouver on our way to Phuket will be one of the highlights of our vacation. There are so many choices of the authentic styles of Japanese cuisine that I don't have here in Kansas City. Now I'm thinking robata yaki...

You could always take a longer stopover to take part in our dining scene a bit more! ;)

The more I read the more I wish I could. We are on award tickets from Kansas City to Dallas to Vancouver on AA, then to Phuket on Cathay in business class. It was very hard to get the seats and I had to take the routing I could get. No stopovers allowed. I did spend 3 days in Vancouver precruise about 10 years ago and loved it. I'm a huge fan of all things Japanese and enjoyed the heavy Asian influence.

CX 835 has been dropped for the day we were on it and we were moved to CX 889. It leaves 2 hours later, at 2:00am. So now we have a 7 hour layover. Is there public transport from the airport to Richmond? That looks like the closest neighborhood to go get a Japanese meal before the flight, which because of the late departure all we'll do is go right to sleep and skip dinner at 2:00 (which will be 4:00am my body clock time).
