The two classic hotels are the Intercontinental and the Hilton. Good high end hotels close to the "center" of San Salvador.

There's also Mariott Courtyard adjacent to La Gran Via, which has plenty of restaurants, bars and a few shops. I've been staying there lately and realy like it.

Not a lot of great culinary options in San Salvador, but find one of the more upscale pupusa places and enjoy. Drawing blanks on the names (Santa Maria? San Jorge?, something along those lines). There's also some decent steak places.

I'm a fan of alanw's trip report (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182379). Some of us who subsequently traveled to El Salvador added info to it.

YBMTI, Carol :)

FYI, we're taking the AVE to Madrid this weekend so we can visit Spain's first Pollo Campero. :D
