I ordered a full size car for 10 days- 4 weeks before pickup date.
please note I am an Australian and do not know makes and models of cars in the Americas
when I arrived at the city location the car I was given had a least 100 dents.
they had no other cars to give me so they said so I accepted and drove to pickup other guests.
The mufler was noisy and the radio didnt work at all excpet a crashing sound every bump so I drove the the Westin location to change cars.
The b---t at the location said what did I want as I was upgraded to a better than full size.
I said "well just give me the full size without the dents and a radio that works".
she said I had ordered an intermediate and that I could have a full size volswagon jetta but she had to go get it from airport dollar or I would have to get it.
I was in a huge hurry as had to get to merida early that night.
I drove to the airport to save time and also to not have to look at the face of this unhappy woman
after a heap of waiting for the car rental contract to be re written.
I got the jetta
this has now taken 2 hrs of arguing pushing my arival to merida back and having to go on the express way and pay $us30

no glove box cover but the car looked small. I asked about a full size they said jetta is a full size.
without knowing what was full size I accepted.
after driving to merida and realising that thrifty had just one location cun.
I could not swap the car . I had four reasonable size adults and 4 bags we were balancing one bag on our lap.
the car became increasingly uncomfortable on the 1600 ml journey. I called the cun location and asked again about a full size. they skirted around and said I could have lots of cars for $60 a day
when I asked about a jetta they said it was full size.
I argued but they wouldnt budge.
on returning the vehicle I spoke to the manager of CUN airport thrifty.. she said jetta is fullsize.
I said its not at dollar and thats where I picked up the car.
she wouldnt budge.
I told her I had called the Dept of consumer complaints and the visitors bureau which I had and the tact changed.
she said she would re look at the cost.(us$750)
she took it down to $550us as charged by a midsize.
I accepted as I had to get ot the airport for my return flight but told her the complaint would still stand.
she had ruined 4 peoples holiday to Mexico.
firstly I wanted to warn you all that CUN does what they please as far as giving you what you dont order.

second how good are the US thrifty customer claims and the Dept of consumer complaints in mexico do they take ripping of visitors seriously?

It's worth a call or an email.

Email here:

http://www.thrifty.com/contacts/EmailForm.aspx?ID=41&nature=Complaints%20and%20Difficulties

Call this number:

+1.877.283.0898

If you are already back in Australia and can't dial an 877 number (it's a U.S. toll-free/freephone number), post back and I may be able to find a direct normal number (probably in the 918 area code--Tulsa, Oklahoma--as that's where DTAG's world headquarters is).

I just did a hire with them and they make you sign a statement to say they are charging you 11500 P per $US

when first getting off an aircraft one does not usually know the real rate. the real rate around town ws 10450. spo they are effectively charging you 10% more for the $.

these people are certainly a ripoff:td:
they said
if u have pesos we will charge you cash in pesos(who caries thatmany pesos when leaving mexico:rolleyes:) otherwise you are stuck with the 11500.,
so a quote for $us550 turned into over $A700 for me
DONT USE THEM!:td:

the Thrifty complaint centre said they would get back to me within 14 days well it has now been over 21 days and still no reply I just think they dont care at all.
I called the complaint number but at 7pm they pulled the plug and I lost the call.
so have to start again and call again tomorow.

My Dad and I rented a van each from Thrifty on the 12th of Oct to 18th(11:30pm). Reservation#s are DTNLM4,DTNLGV. The lady at the counter, informed us that if we brought in the vans in early, we don't get charged for the days we don't use it. We brought in the 2 vans on the 16th 4pm. When I pulled in the van to the return area, I received the receipt, which did not reflect any break in the price per early return. The lady checking in the vars told me to go to the counter to have it sorted out. When I got to the counter, I was told they don't give breaks even if the car was brought in early. She said it was in the contract. I said no problem, I'll just bring back the van on the 18th which was the original return date. The lady at the counter said she could not give us the vans back and will also charge us an early return fee. I left immediately without incident. I decided to call customer service explain the problem to them, well they hung up on me. I have rented from, Budget, Avis, Enterprise, Alamo without any problems. This is my First and Last with Thrifty. I'm waiting for thrifty to make this right.

There's many of these stories at CUN. Hertz seems to stand out. Avis seems to get few complaints.

Just noticed this thread by the recent bump. I had a matter with National Car Rental at Cabo San Lucas and can tell you that PROFECO, the department you're referring to, worked very hard for me and I ended up getting 100% of the money I demanded back via their claim process. So I would say they definitely take foreigners' complaints (filed from abroad) seriously.
