Dear clever FT'ers

My Dad has a bit of a points conundrum that I'm finding hard to see the back end of... :confused:

Basically hes trying to get from LHR to AKL at some stage (or as near as will take him), ideally I would think some form of part cash part miles for maybe upgrades for two of them would be ideal...

Now I'm a BAEC chap, I have no clue about other programs, but from what I can see ANZ air points / dollars seems to be the most restrictive thus the posting here.

So his points are as follows:

Amex rewards = 51k
Starwood = 0
BA miles = 50k
BMI = 900
ANZ Air dollars = 1114
Airmiles = 1900

Can anyone unpick this please, and find a route to get as many of them to as few places as possible, I'm guessing that getting them into Star Alliance pref ANZ would be the best idea, any help would be greatfully received.

Thanks KCF

Ouch. Assuming the bmi miles are 900 and not 900k (900k would be a cinch), then not too many options.

From the Air NZ upgrade chart (http://www.airnz.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/upgrade_chart.htm), a standby upgrade LHR-AKL economy to premium economy costs 440 airbucks each, each way. (Confirmed upgrades in this case are a waste - if you are prepared to pay for the high economy fare classes that confirmed upgrades require then may as well just pay for premium economy.)

Thus have enough airbucks to upgrade both of them to premium economy, one way. Since standby upgrades are hard to clear (especially on this route) they should request u/gs for each leg LHR-HKG and HKG-AKL (or LHR-LAX and LAX-AKL) separately and if they don't clear then apply for the return.

From mileage converter (http://www.webflyer.com/programs/mileage_converter/index.php), 40k Amex rewards (UK) can be converted into 385 airbucks via SPG. This, together with remaining balance is enough to upgrade to premium economy 1 of them for the return, but not both.

Alternatively, if okay to pay for premium economy, there is enough airbucks for them both to upgrade to business class half way, on a standby basis only.

Thanks Kiwiflyer for your help... I had hoped that there may be a trick or some decent value in 1:1'ing his Amex in to BMI or another SA airline, and then doing something with ANZ, I really find it hard to usnderstand ANZ's airdollars, but I guess Im just BA brainwashed....
