I know there are various discussions regarding this offer already in progress, but I thought I would start a new one since those are very voluminous.
I got the offer in the mail yesterday, with 50,000 bonus membership rewards points being credited 6 weeks after my first purchase. Looks great and I will probably sign up over the next couple of days. I am not happy about the extra $175 for an additional cardholder, but I guess it is what it is...
How soon after upgrading do you actually receive the Platinum card? Has anyone been very dissapointed with the platinum after upgrading from the gold card?
Thanks in advance...

I'm not sure why we needed a new thread to continue an existing discussion, but such is life, I suppose...
For the USA the card will arrive in 5-7 days unless you sign up via the telephone and specifically request overnight delivery, and that may or may not be available; it was for me when i initially signed up a few years ago.
As for being disappointed, you will be if the benefits are not useful to you or if you think that they are something they are not. There are a ton of threads here that detail what they are, so I won't get in to that, but if you know what you are supposed to be getting going in to it then you should have no reason to be disappointed. If you expect the 2-4-1 IAP to save you tons of money on your next leisure trip to Europe or for the Concierge to come up with last minute seats at face value to the NCAA Final 4 championships then you are likely to be disappointed.

As the previous posted mentioned, it will take approximately 5-7 days. The benefits for me personally are useful. I tend to use airport lounges regularly and the annual fee pays for itself. The benefits will be useful to everyone on an individual level. If you don't think you will be taking advantage of the perks then perhaps you are better off not getting the platinum card and paying the hefty annual fee.

The fee makes sense for me since I use the airport lounges and enjoy the FHR benefits. If I didn't travel as much though, I would not have a Platinum card.

I went ahead and bit the bullet and signed up for the offer. The $450 annual fee + $175 annual fee for additional cards seems high, but I think some of the benefits will satisfy the fees.
Thanks for your thoughts...

... $175 annual fee for additional cards seems high...
How many additional cards do you need? You can request "up to three" supplementary Platinum cards for the single $175 fee.
Do the additional cardholders need Platinum cards, or just the ability to make purchases? For $45 you could request "up to five" Gold cards.
Another approach for no annual fee you could open an American Express credit card account, such as Optima, Blue, The Knot or The Nest. You need to apply for the credit card in the same name as the charge card to link to the same Membership Rewards account. (Used alone the credit cards participate in the inferior Membership Rewards Express program, but when linked to a charge card they earn the same as a purchase made with Platinum.) The primary drawback is that the credit card would generate a separate statement.

I have been a gold card holder for a little over a year, averaging about $3K/month on card. I had previously gotten platinum card upgrades but with no bonuses, so I told myself that when I got an offer that included at least 25,000 bonus points I would jump on it. I was very pleased to receive the 50K offer.

I recently received a letter in the mail offering Plat with 25K bonus points on first charge (I have an SPG AmEx and Blue card already). I had heard about the 50K bonus on here, so I called and asked about it -- they looked through my account and approved me for the higher bonus. So if any of you are in the market, don't hesitate to call and ask.
(I don't know if they are always so forthcoming with it, though -- the sales agent remarked that I used the SPG card a lot, which has been true lately as I have been purchasing some $8K+ air tickets for business trips on it, so volume has been very high. If you're more of an "average" customer, as I likely will be in the coming months, YMMV. Good luck.)

No restrictions whatsoever. I have three totally unrelated (to me or each other) people as secondary account holders. You must be able to trust them though since all charges are ultimately your responsibility.
We basically "share" the annual fees so it makes it a good deal all around.

A friend of mine at work who is not into miles or points told me of an offer he got in the mail for 50,000 MR points and first year FREE.
He had to spend $500 by 6/30/08 to get the points. He ask me if it was a good deal.
I told him he was crazy not to take it then cancel before the year was up if he did not want to keep the card.
This was not to upgrade because he does not have any cards at all and not familiar with how it all works. He only knows about any of this because of my talk about all of the award travel that I get from Delta and United.
So I gave him a rundown on how it works and what to do to get the miles to an airline to use them. (needs to transfer points to airline for a small fee)
He's still thinking about it.

Points??? :) No, you have to qualify first, then apply and pay initiation fee plus first year membership fee. Then you can earn points yourself by spending on your new Centurion card ;)
PS: I think you also have to have Platinum card for at least a year in order to qualify. So to answer your question, no you cannot upgrade or earn points to upgrade from Gold to Centurion. However, you can get bonus points for upgrading to Platinum card (see above posts)

Well, my 50k offer just came yesterday. I was telling myself I still have to think about it now that the 2-4-1 is gone. Then I decided the only important thing to focus on is the $450 for 50k MR, which I think most of us agree is worth it. Even if I never use the benefits (let alone the card) once, the 50k points are worth $450. So, I think I'll take this one. It's not the 100k that has been reported here, but I will stop being greedy.
Does everyone agree, even with the diminished benefits, that this is still an offer to jump on?

Hi there, I've been reading this site for a year, but this is my first day to post.
I just wanted to say I also received the 50,000 points offer to upgrade to Platinum from Gold. I have until end of December to accept. The offer is for 50,000 plus double points for the 1st 3 months, but I have to ask if all the purchases will get double points or just everyday purchases.
This was the 2nd offer they made. Two weeks ago I was on the phone with Amex CS about a charge on my current card, and he made the offer of triple points for the first year to upgrade to Plat, which I said I would think about. He told me something like "that's the current offer for you today." Two weeks later I received the 2nd offer in the mail.
Have been a Gold card member for just a year, have been with Amex since my grad school days....2001 (Blue for Students then Optima). I'm mid 30's and since I was a foreign student in 2001, I have exactly 7 1/2 years of credit history. I only took the Gold card to avail of the transfer points to airline miles benefit. (did not get any points for signing up to Gold).
So, was pretty surprised to get the offer, but I went straight to flyertalk to look it up. From the previous posts, there seems to be agreement that it's a good way to get the points, so I may go for it. I have a lot of travelling to do next year due to family events. Thanks.

Yes 50K is a nice number. Theoretically, you could go back to the Gold card after the points have been credited and get your annual fee back pro-rata, but if you're traveling a lot the Airline lounge benefit may come in handy.

Just to update, the offer indeed included double points for the 1st 3 months for all purchases made, not just certain purchases.

As has been discussed throughout this and other threads, these offers are targeted. An "offer number" won't do anything for you.

I'm not offered any points online to upgrade. I did get a upgrade offer in the mail today...a very generous double points on gas and food for 1yr! Should I bite on this offer? LOL I did notice the wife got a 100K offer back in Oct. but that is the last one I have seen since.

Double points is available to be registered for even gold and green card users. There is a link here as one of the topics, so the upgrade with this isn't worth it since you can just use any AMEX charge card.
I think the 2x points is up to 1k a month? Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The link works, but if you try to put in existing card information, you will get an error when the application tries to verify your credit card. Based on the offer number in the URL, my guess is this is an old offer that has long since expired.

Did you even read that thread before you posted this? It's less than a one page thread and clearly states that link will not allow you to upgrade becasuse the offer is targeted.
