Got this as a YC class rental two consecutive weeks at PHL. Two different vehicles - one with <1000 on the odometer, one around 5000.

Performance - the car came equipped with a 2.5L 5-cylinder, rated for 170 hp according to VW's website. Engine is coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission (with semi-automatic capability). First time I've seen a 6-speed transmission in a non-premium type vehicle. Rated to go 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. Acceleration at cruising speed is some of the best I've seen in a mid-size rental vehicle - it drops from 6 -> 4 and leaps forward. The car had a sporty ride without feeling too rough - a good balance between comfort and performance in the suspension.

Mileage: EPA rated 21/29 using the new standards. Sounds right to me. It's got at least 40 miles of wiggle room before the needle drops below F.

Interior: One of the nicer interiors in the C class. Noise was well-controlled. VW-standard blue/red dashboard. CD audio system, but did not include an AUX jack or the optional satellite radio. Interior space was acceptable - you wouldn't want someone much over 6'0" in the back seat, like any midsize, but it got the job done.

Keys - the usual VW switchblade key. Kind of annoying on one of the two rentals to have both keys + the valet key. Made for a rather large mass in my jacket pocket.

Overall, one of the better choices in a C class rental in terms of "fun to drive", albeit one you probably won't come across too often.

Thanks for the report. I would take a Jetta over a Corolla any day!

PS, I have added this to the Ride Report sticky.

Had a couple of these from a local HLE where I know they get them from the local VW dealer. Wouldn't have expected at PHL. The ones I drove were both '07s, though, but clearly brought into the fleet near the end of '07 when I drove them. (One only had 300 miles on it when I drove it.) The '07 is the same as '08 in all major ways as far as I know. Both times took on a long freeway drive, gets somewhere in the vicinity of 26 mpg realistically. Basically agree with above, would take it again any day for a C rental. My key ring came apart (unintentionally, actually, but handy) so I didn't have to carry all the stupid keys. ;)

I actually got one last week at the Stamford Metrocenter in CT. I didn't think much one way or the other about it (as I only had it for a couple of hours and I'm not a big car enthusiast), but upon my return the desk agent acted as if I had hit the jackpot! Noting that they get very few Jetta's and they are always in demand :D

Understandable - these two back-to-back rentals are the only times I've ever even seen VWs in a Hertz lot in the US.

FWIW, neither of the two that I got had the HLE sticker you sometimes see. One vehicle had NY plates (out of the Albany pool) and the other appeared to be in the PHL pool according to the key tag.

Now, if only I could get a TDI around here. :)

Got a Beetle last month, in FLL. FLL seemed to have quite a few, including at least one Beetle convertible.
