American Express Membership Rewards - Is the Platinum 2 for 1 Business Class benefit ever worth it?

I don't fly that often but when I do I like to go business or first. But it seems that we can save 1000's of dollars getting 2 business class tixs in a reduced fare class than buying one full fare as required by this benefit.....am I missing something?

Also the promo invitation I got to acquire a platinum card says I must fly by December 31, 2008.... is this a limited time offer or is the benefit going away.

If there are routes that do not offer discount premium fares, or where the discount is not significant then it can be worthwhile. For some Central American destinations I know that the CO fares are competitive.
