The only troubling restriction is "Offer good for purchases from eligible US merchants only." This could be taken to exclude foreign airlines, but I think that a purchase booked on the US version of an airline website, and billed in US Dollars, should qualify although I have not asked.

i have both an Amex Blue card and an Amex Fidelity Gold card.
the Blue card is linked to the Full Membership Rewards program of the Gold card.
only my Blue card was eligible for this offer.
any insight into why the Blue card was eligible, but the "specialer" Gold card was snubbed?
i was actually thinking of cancelling the Blue card or switching it to Clear or something, because i always use the Gold card anyway and the Blue card was just sitting there redundant never doing anything. But apparently the Blue could get me specialler offers than the Gold one?
is there information somewhere that compares the special offer opportunities of the different Amex cards?
i might just have to keep the Blue if it gets me more bonuses than the Gold... i wonder if the BlueSky would get me even more special offers.. but maybe that can't be linked to Membership Rewards anyway..

I have noticed the same thing with my Plat. Maybe Amex wants us to carry a balance on the Blue. Yet, even my Optima, which is also a credit product, does not get special offers, while my Blue always does.

Correct, cards which participate in "other" rewards programs are not eligible for Membership Rewards.
It's only a guess, but perhaps your Gold card is not targetted because it is a Fidelity card. American Express may share the transaction fees with Fidelity on those accounts. (Also, it appears the relationship between Fidelity and American Express is not as strong as when these cards were introduced.)

First, this double points is NOT for all amex cards. It includes the Gold (personal) and EXCLUDES most business cards including Business Gold. Even if you are not able to register online, you can always give Amex MR a call and see if they can do it for you/check your cards eligibility.
However, a very IMP thing:
You DO NOT necessarily get double points (in general; not referring to above promo) for purchasing at http://travel.americanexpress.com
In order to get those double points you MUST enroll in a "Travel Management Program" from Amex, which is typically restricted to 'companies who purchase airfares in tens of thousands of dollars' and also has a hefty(for individuals) fee with it.
I researched this option extensively few years back. So unless there has been a major policy change, do not count on getting these 'extra double points'.

Yes, I use a personal Rewards Plus Gold card, but it should work for any USA-issued card enrolled in Membership Rewards because it is a published offer, Bonus ID-3218.
Offer is valid for flights, select hotels (Lowest Rates Guaranteed hotels), Complete Trip (flight + hotel packages) and American Express Vacations packages purchased on the americanexpress.com/travel website through December 31, 2008. Car only reservations and non pre-paid hotels, other purchases and arrangements made during your vacation stay and any charges not included in the vacation are not eligible for bonus points. Bonus points will be credited to your program account 10-12 weeks after time of purchase. Bonus ID-3218. Air bookings purchased through this online booking system are not eligible for the International Airline Program and hotel bookings purchased through this online booking system are not eligible for the Fine Hotels & Resorts Program. These programs are available through Platinum Travel Service.
The booking fee is now $7.00.

This is good to know! 2 years back when I called Amex they made it very clear that to get those double miles at travel.americanexpress.com one has to go through their Travel Mngmt Program.
If you did get double points on BLUE (without a promo) then this is great, for the reason you pointed out ;)
Mia: I know the Rewards Plus Gold card gets double miles anyway for the FIRST year for ANY airline purchase from anywhere (not just through amex). Subsequent years one earns 1.5 miles/$. So, did you get quadrupule miles or triple miles.....or atleast double miles AFTER your 1st year by booking through amex travel site?
And i really wonder, why are Amex Bus cards not eligible for these promos? Any of you ever seen double miles promos on these cards either for travel or other purchases? (apart from the bonuspointsmall ofcourse)

Not exactly. Rewards Plus Gold earns an extra point (first year) or half-point (thereafter) only on airline tickets purchased from Membership Rewards transfer partners. For example, the bonus would apply to CO, DL, VS, etc but would not apply to AA, AS, BA, UA, US, etc.
There's no confusion between these offers. The Rewards Plus Gold bonus points post at the same same time as the base points for the transaction, because they are awarded by the card. The online travel booking bonus points post separately, later, because they are awarded by the travel site, which is currently operated by Travelocity.
