Just wondering what people use on their laptop to secure them for use when in a hotel or some other public location. Do people use a program to limit inbound/outbound traffic to only what they allow? Any good programs out there that are free or relatively free that meet this build?

VPN. Most companies will have some way for you to do this (many schools as well).

When I first glanced at your thread title, I thought you meant the notebook cable locks (http://www.amazon.com/Targus-PA410U-DEFCON-Notebook-Computer/dp/B000031XCM) and I gig up the previous thread: storing laptop? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=388310).

Then I realized you are talking about softwares. From what you described (limit inbound/outbound traffic), isn't that what firewalls do? It's a minimal must have safety practice to be installed on any computer and not just for travel. @:-)

I don't like the Windows built-in Firewall and always use ZoneAlarm (free version).

If you don't have a big company's VPN--

I've used HotspotVPN for a year. Safe, easy and inexpensive.

Also JiWire has one.

Don't go wireless without one.
