I have two relatively positive outcomes from recent experiences with AmEx. Since I’d be quick to complain if I didn’t like things, figured I’d be fair and report the good.
In November-December, they ran a MR bonus program for double points for online or phone purchases. These bonus points showed up on last week’s statement. I noticed that three transactions of mine were not doubled: an overseas internet purchase, an air ticket (bought by phone thru AmEx travel), and a charitable donation. Pointed it out to AmEx – they told me these types of purchases were excluded from the bonuses (I don't remember such exclusions in the original registration). However, as a goodwill gesture they are making a customer service credit equal to the same number of points.
Also, I had returned to having a Platinum card last year after several years of not doing it. I called and applied for it at the end of March ’07. The $450 fee was billed in early April. The $75 fee to link my corporate card to the rewards was billed on March 30, 2007. So advance a year and I get my recent statement and it shows that the $75 annual fee was billed again on March 1, 2008. It may not seem like a big deal but basically they picked up almost a full month – think of it as an 8% surcharge or duplicate fee. In my opinion, it should have been billed on March 30, 2008 or April 1, 2008.
I contacted AmEx about this. They sent me an answer about tiers which didn’t seem to relate back to my question directly but, again, as a goodwill gesture, they gave me 10,000 MR points. More than fair I felt for the month’s fee.
So two positive experiences with AmEx customer service about MR issues………….
