So I've had a particular AMEX account for about 3 years now. Started off as a Gold, then I upgraded to Platinum for a year, now I'm back to Gold since I have an AU card from another account. I have several other AMEX cards, including a Corporate, 2 SPG, and an inNYC.
The annual fee for the Gold card recently hit my account and there's really no reason for me to keep this card. I almost never use it, don't need any of the perks (since I have a Platinum), and wouldn't mind just taking the number of credit cards I have in general down a bit. The only minor complication is that my Corporate card is linked to the same MR account and my linkage/MR fee for the Corporate card gets billed to the Gold card - based on my discussions with AMEX I assume that this will be easy enough to sort out.
So, I have tried 3 times to cancel this card. Once a couple months prior to the new annual fee hitting my account - I was offered a $25 statement credit with no obligation to keep the card. Obviously, I'll take it. Earlier this week, I was offered 2500 MR points to keep it, again with no obligation. Obviously, I'll take it. Today I was offered a $55 statement credit, still with no obligation. I'll take that too. I have no interest in keeping this card long term and really do want to cancel, but they keep offering more and more! Clearly, these are small amounts, which is fine because I've literally only spent about $1000 on this card over the past year, however I can't see a reason to turn them down and will continue to accept if they offer.
My question is, how long will this continue on for and why? Don't they see the history of their prior offers? The statement period closes shortly and I would prefer to actually close the card and get the Corp linkage fee issue sorted out prior to then. Otherwise, I'll have to get things prorated and refunded, and it will just be a pain.
I guess I shouldn't be complaining, but I really do just want to close this card, yet can't turn down free points or $!
