I am going to upgrade my AMEX gold card to a Platinum Card. Why would I spend the $450 on the Personal Platinum Card when I could get the Small Business Card for $395. I can't see that there is any difference.

Please let me know if I am missing something here.....

Welcome to FlyerTalk.

Rumor has it that the Business card fee is going up to $450 as well. There are some other subtle differences in the benefits, but I cannot think of many that you'll lose switching from the personal card. I'm trying to make a similar switch right now to specifically get some of the Biz card benefits (Regus, mostly).

An Amex agent told me they got a memo that the Business Platinum card is going up to $450, but that people who were in on the previous rate would be grandfathered in.

If you shop at the places that give OPEN discounts frequently, you can rack up some discounts with that. Otherwise, I think the Platinum Card is a better deal since you get up to 3 additional cardholders for $175 total. Since I have one additional cardholder and would have to pay the $175 anyway, I've used the two freebie cardholders to give to 1) my mom who uses it for airport lounge access and 2) my best friend who uses it for the same thing... Business additional cardholders are $200 or so EACH.
