They wanted a closer look at that little sparkling something he'd packed away for his trip with his girlfriend...and she was right there with him!

At least she said yes! :)

Wow...mine (my wife's, really) didn't leave my pocket through security or the flights. Not a chance. I can't imagine leaving it in the bag.

diamonds stand out on x-rays. They are used comercialy in diamond mining. You would think that an engagment ring would be an easily identified item in a x-rayed bag.

At least he had the brains not to put it in his checked bag.

Poor guy. Though he could have planned this a little better.

Ditto. I proposed on September 1, 2001 on a trip to San Francisco. I can only imagine what it would have been like if I had booked the trip for a few weeks later.

I had the same concern this past summer, and actually solicited some input (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=706578)on FT.

I made it past 3-4 different security checkpoints. Most of the time, the ring was in my carry on. At the last checkpoint (SEZ airport, flying on an inter-island flight within the Seychelles), I had the ring in my pocket. No issue at all, thank goodness!

MrKS had the ring in his carry-on and the agent wanted to inspect his bag. Luckily we have a standard way of going through security (I go first, then the bags, then he goes through once all the bags have gone through). So right after I walked through the x-ray MrKS whispered to the agent that he had a ring in his bag and not to say anything. Then he proposed 5 days later in PVR. :)

Ditto for me (using the same method as sbm12).

Proposing before going on the trip would have taken all the fun out of the trip, for the 'proposer'!
